28 yr old dental student
I’m scheduled for cataract surgery next month and looking to see if any dental professional/dentists can give me insight on which IOL they prefer and how the surgery has affected their work.
For context, I was born with congenital cataracts which were pretty stable until i had to go on high dose prednisone for about 5 months due to an unstable chronic illness. My eye pressures at the time were 40+ but after combigan and stopping prednisone it went back to a baseline of around 16.
Now I have a grade 3 cataract in one eye and (-7.00) and grade 2 in the other (-4.00). The eye with the grade 3 cataract is at 20/40 with corrected vision. I’ve been nearsighted my entire life and have used contacts to limit the effects of my anisometropia.
I noticed it becoming harder to do crown preps and focusing my eye. Using my loupes has made it hard for my eyes to function together, I started feeling like they were looking through the loupes independently, causing double vision. In addition, even with using a headlight AND overhead light, my vision is dim/hazy/and blurry.
This was especially concerning to me because I’m starting clinic soon and don’t want to take longer than usual on preps and compromise patient care.
My ophthalmologist was hesitant at first, but after seeing how far it progressed in less than a year, they recommend Envy multi focal lenses. I’m scheduled for next month to complete the surgery on the more compromised eye and completing the other eye 4 to 6 weeks after.
