I've been a T1D for 5 years now and have spent nearly that entire time on 25 units of basaglar. Generally speaking its worked out fine for me and the 1 units of insulin to 10 carb ratio has stayed consistent barring when I'm sick. This entire time I have worked a sedentary 9-5 job during the week and 1-2 shifts of a part time job where I get 15k steps a shift on the weekend. I also work out with lifting and 30 minutes of cardio 3 times a week.

Over the last 4 months I've lost 20 pounds by dieting and found that I needed to go to 24 units due to nighttime lows. Generally speaking it worked wonderfully for a month until I felt like I needed to go to 23 units because nighttime lows returned despite nothing really changing during that month. I've been on 23 units for a week now and nighttime lows are gone, but my response to my short acting insulin has both been sometimes sensitive (needing 30% less) but largely resistant (needing 20% more insulin) so I'm considering going back to 24.

Considering I've been on the same regimen for so long, this changeup is a little frustrating to navigate as now it feels like I need to swap my dosage daily. (23 on more active days, 24 on less active)

I frequently read here that people change their basal amounts in anticipation of stress, illness, high/low amounts of carbs, physical activity and I can't begin to wrap my head around how to gauge what is a good basal level aside from daily basal testing at different values.

I understand that everyone's body is different but it would be appreciated if people could share how they adjust their basal levels and their experience with needing to change short acting insulin calculations when doing it.
