Figuring out sleep as someone with a 4am to 12:30pm shift

I am a night owl through and through, so I have kind of decided to sleep during the day.

To give background, I’m someone who can function well on a bad night of sleep. Sometimes (as someone who previously worked 9-5:30) I would go to sleep anywhere from 4am-6am for no reason but being wide awake. I have worked 2 shifts from 4am to 12pm and I’m still trying to figure out what my weekly sleep schedule will look like.

I kind of want my sleep schedule to have a couple days normal so I can be social those days if I choose and treat Sunday as some sort of a reset day to get back to the 4am-12pm work schedule Monday.

Does anyone have a day sleeper schedule they can share that fits what I’m looking for? So far I’ve slept 1-7pm and then a nap a from 1-2:30 am but I think I’m going to try 1-8pm then nap from 2-2:30 after my shift tomorrow because I kinda felt like it was too early for me to sleep at 1am (LOL).

One downside a month is working a weekend. For example I won’t work August 27th , will work 28th and 29th then won’t work September 1st. Any suggestions on what to do those weeks will be appreciated 🫩

Maybe a bad day, maybe a wake up call

Hello! I’m F22 and I just recently graduated with my bachelors of science in biology, health and society. I just started a new job as an inpatient phlebotomist at a hospital with around 200 beds. I am phlebotomy certified and today was my first day on this job. Today went by in a flash (8.5 hours) but the phlebotomy team is short staffed and today stressed me out really bad. By the middle of the shift I couldn’t even get myself to act normal and stopped talking as much.

It was such a bad shift that I started to question my own ambitions. I didn’t expect inpatient care to be best by any means but I feel like there wasn’t even a moment of rest or happiness in my day. I can’t even explain how drained I felt. On top of the stress, I kept making small mistakes because everything was so fast paced and understaffed. It was the worst first day I have ever had. I absolutely loved outpatient care when I did my internship in college and the 3 days I trained in outpatient were stressful but something I recognized from previous experience.

I also feel like I’m in mourning of my old job. It was not in healthcare, it was a job I got for work study purposes having to do with my passion, children. I absolutely loved it. I worked as a teacher’s aide in a daycare for the age group 1-3. Although, my experience as a teacher’s aide had a lot less responsibilities until I worked a year. I was not allowed to be alone with kids or allowed to change diapers until a year after working. I did work there for over a year, started do these responsibilities and still loved the position. Working with children and being an early educator was so fulfilling in a way that I still miss even after a month of quitting (I moved away after college).

My intention was to get patient care hours so I can later on apply to PA school with the intention of working as a pediatric PA or family medicine PA in a clinic setting. After today, I’m questioning if my passion and ambitions are truly in medicine. I miss working at the daycare so badly, especially after today. I feel like I need some guidance on my path. I loved studying medicine. I loved outpatient phlebotomy (it was fully staffed though) and I loved being a teacher’s aide. I know it might have been just a bad day but I seriously hated today and now I’m panicking about what my future looks like if my happiness and passion doesn’t fit in inpatient healthcare. One of the major reasons I chose PA is the reported “better” work life balance. I hate to idea of being on call 24/7 like a doctor and being someone who holds the outcomes of a life in their hand (like surgeons).

I’m still willing to give the job a fair shot. The training period is 5 more weeks and I plan to at least work 2 weeks in inpatient care before I even think about making any rash decisions and longer before actually making any drastic life changes.

Please help me make some sort of plan to find my path. I want to enjoy my job. Being tired at the end of the day is one thing, but hating how the day went and contemplating quitting on the first day is something completely different.
