Advice on growing my portfolio
I’ve been working in social media marketing for a little over 5 years now! Majority of that time was spent at an agency working for clients in the automotive , real estate and hospitality industry. It was a full media company, so we offered both content creation (high quality and organic on iPhone). Overall, I loved the services and the client roster I worked with!
I was unfortunately laid off from the company after 3.5 years of working there. Now I’m at a PR company but don’t feel the social side of the company is strong. I came into running accounts that would only post stock photos, and not too much focus on the actual product… no strategy whatsoever. (When I tell you I almost lost it seeing cats and dogs being posted…) The company also doesn’t have a media team. It’s just me grabbing content whenever there are market events (which I’m fortunate enough to travel for). They occur every few months so I try to stack up and repurpose as much as I can. Since starting here, I’ve been able to implement a strategy into the accounts using what I’ve learned in the past and have been seeing good results.
My issue is that there is no room for growth here and feel that my input isn’t considered. I also feel that it’s somewhat micromanaged,so I what I post is somewhat overlooked because of the lack of understand of the owner.. so I don’t this I can grow in this environment.
I am still keeping my options open. I’ve applied to numerous roles with my portfolio but don’t seem to get anywhere with it. Any suggestions to making my applications stand out more? Is there any side project I can do to showcase my skill without using my internal accounts?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
