I compiled the research on youth pitching injuries into one place — some of these numbers surprised me

Not a doctor. I’m a dad of a youth pitcher and pitched myself (needed Tommy John at 18). I went through the published studies on youth arm injuries and pulled out the numbers that seemed most useful for parents.

The one that hit me hardest as a parent: in one study, 47% of youth players said they’d been encouraged to keep playing through arm pain. Unfortunately I've been there before...

Any of these numbers surprise you?

Full disclosure: I built an app for tracking pitch counts across teams, and the full writeup with links to every study is on that site. Happy to share it if anyone wants it, but the studies themselves are the real takeaway. Curious what other parents here have seen.

PDF outputs

Not a coach, so I only have access to the parent side of things. But I’m curious what reports coaches are able to produce from a single game/season if anyone can share. Is it just like stats, box scores or the play by play? Does it produce an actual scorecard like you would be scoring the game by hand?

Long toss distance by age?

Curious if there's any general guidance on how far long toss should/could be for different age groups. Is there a range kids should work towards before losing their mechanics?

2027 USA: Hype Fire vs. Supra

In the market for a 30 drop 10 USA bat to upgrade from the 2025 29 drop 10 Louisville Select Pwr (very end loaded). He also has a 2025 USSSA 29 drop 10 Hype Fire that he loves and swings really well.

Does it make sense to stick with the Hype or try out the Supra? I know they’re all just repaints from last year. And that the Supra USA is a repaint from the Meta last year and is nothing like the U trip version of the Supra.

He needs a balanced bat and I know the Hype has been good to him. But he likes the Supra paint job better than the peach fire haha. Assuming all USA bats are basically the same thing?

When to buy a bat - fall or spring?

Saw the new Hype Fire’s released this week. Is now the time when new models typically get released or should I wait until spring time? My son has perfectly fine USA and USSSA bats for now but can probably move up an inch from 29 to 30 drop 10 (rising 10U).

How do you manage multiple teams per season?

My son plays for his town rec league as well as a travel team that plays in a league on Saturdays. There's also a club team that only plays in a handful of tournaments per season. We can mostly juggle all of it and he rarely has to miss games because they never overlap, but curious what's the average number of teams around here?

What does your ideal fall ball schedule look like?

Curious at the youth level if parents/teams are focusing more on development vs. loading up on games and tournaments. Fall always goes by so quickly, and I think a true offseason in the winter is important before ramping back up in the spring. Youth baseball has become a 12-month sport in a lot of regions and I feel like kids need to rest their arms - and play other sports too!
