Recommendations for a 1st BRIEF visit to London in September?

My partner and I will be traveling to Europe this fall. We will have one full day in London and are looking for ways to spend it.

We wish we had more time to spend in the city, but the way the tickets back home fall, we only have a few hours on a Wednesday evening and a full Thursday before we leave early on Friday morning.

What would you include as a must-see in one day?

We enjoy theater, so are considering a show (Cabaret or Mousetrap) and we are staying in Bloomsbury, but other than that, we have no plans. We also enjoy history, British TV and Literature (especially Pratchett) and are open to most things.

We considered the British Museum, a palace tour, a high tea as well, but nothing has been set yet.

I'm not sure if it would be better to "see as much as we can see" in that time frame or if we should just choose 1-2 things and get a good experience.
