Afternoon Tea Ampersand Dresscode

I know about dresscode, I know about Smart Casual. BUT we will be in the city all day and have our Afternoon Tea booked fairly late (6pm), directly after the National History Museum. We can’t be in dress shoes all day and will the girls could carry nice sandals to wear for tea, we can’t take my husband‘s size 14 shoes. How strict is the dresscode exactly? Does someone know?

In LND with family

I’m going to LONDON with my family, all of us has been there already various times. one of the members is under the age of 16. I’m writing here to hopefully have suggestions of what can be nice to do in the evenings (experiences/games/concerts) that is not so touristic. Also I would love to have some suggestions on where to go to eat at lunch/dinner, would love if you can suggest places with live music that is nice but not €€€€. We want to do a macro part of London each day. Thank you thank you in advance

Visiting London for 8 days - how to meet locals?

I (38m) am visiting London for 8 days, starting next Monday. I’m flying in from San Francisco with my family. I don’t just want to do touristy stuff. I want to actually meet locals, mingle, and get to know people.

Are there any particular areas of London that are more conducive to that? I’ve heard good things about Shoreditch and Hackney, but I’m looking for advice from people who know the area better.

Are there any particular apps or places you’d recommend? For example, I’ve done a few Timeleft dinners and I hear good things about 222. Anything along those lines?

What about pub crawls? I hear there are quite a few of those every night in London and some friends have told me that that would be a good thing to look into.

How much time did you spend at the Tower of London with kids?

We’re visiting London this summer with our 3 year old and I’m trying to plan our days without completely exhausting everyone. I originally thought we’d spend maybe 90 minutes at the, but now I’m reading comments from people saying they stayed half the day and still didn’t see everything.

Part of the problem is my son is currently obsessed with castles and guards, so I already know he’s going to want to stop every five minutes and stare at things. We also move slower with snacks, bathroom breaks, and random toddler negotiations

Did most of you treat it as a quick stop or more of a half-day activity? Trying to figure out if I should keep dinner plans nearby or leave the evening completely open.

Can you still see gaurds around St.James's Palace on non-changing days?

Hi!

We may be around Buckingham Palace / St James’s Palace on a non-Changing of the Guard day, but would still love to see some guards / marching / royal atmosphere if possible.

Is it still worth going there in the morning on those days?

If so, where would you recommend standing or walking around, and around what time would be best?

Thanks!

22M, Moving to London in 2 weeks from Manchester, what's the first I need to do?

moving from Manchester in 3 weeks, give me the ONE thing to do in my first week when I land there?!

Living near aldgate east, work near hammersmith

everyone I know has sent me a super long checklist. i don't want that lol. just the one thing that actually made london feel less like a city you're surviving and more like somewhere you live. (i've already prepped for my bank account becoming an abyss very soon)

what's your take?

1 day in London pre cruise

I myself am planning a trip to London, but this is for a good friend, who doesn't use Reddit.
Her and her adult son are going on a cruise to Norway. They will be arriving the morning of March 6, and as things stand, their plane will land around 9:30 AM. But she is going to book hotel rooms for the 5th & 6th, so they can get into their rooms as soon as they arrive in the city.
She is asking for ideas of where to stay. They probably would like to visit the Tower of London and grab a bite to eat somewhere before turning in for a fairly early evening. Any suggestions of a decent hotel? Not budget, but not luxury either. If they decide they do not want to see the Tower of London, would you have any other iconic London sights for them to see in that short time frame, with a hotel recommendation for that?
Also, any ideas for transportation to the port? She has some medical issues and cannot walk too far. So I do not think a train is the way to go.
She would really appreciate your help. she is pretty overwhelmed trying to put all the pieces together. THANKS!

Going to London 6/7-9/7 I have some questions

I (35f) am going to London for the first time ever!

My main reason for coming is the MCR concert at Wembley stadium on the 8th. Though she isn’t coming to the concert with me, I will be travelling with my mom.

So first question: is there something I should know that isn’t mentioned on Wembleys website?

Second: is there’s something to do around the Wembley area? I would like to get to the area early so I won’t be late because I get lost on public transportation, but I would also like to not be bored 😅

Third: how early do people usually queue up for events like this?

Fourth: I really want to experience an old British pub, but I don’t like beer. Will I be judged horribly for ordering something else?

Fifth: where do you get the best burger?

I hope you will take some time to answer. Thank you in advance.

Any experience with Hyde Park Riding Stables?

I'm heading to London soon, and of course, the regency romantic in me would LOVE to go for a ride on a horse in Hyde Park to live out a Jane Austen/Bridgerton afternoon. But are the horses treated well? Has any been? Could you share your experiences?

Best way to get to Wembley Stadium (travelling from Glasgow)

Hello, I’m trying to plan to see Harry Styles at Wembley on 20th June. I’m going myself and I’ve never been to London myself, or Wembley at all before.

Would it be easier to fly or get the train from Glasgow and what is the best route? If flying, which airport is best to fly to?

In terms of hotels as well, am I best staying somewhere within walking distance of Wembley if I’m going myself or is there another area that would be quite straightforward to get to/from?

Thanks.

London with an active 85 yo woman, who has traveled the world

I (early 60s) want to take my mother (age 85) to London. My mom has traveled all over the world, mostly with her sister, who passed away last year. She has technically been to London, on a Viking tour; however, they were late getting away from the ship & then there was a terrorist incident, so they saw almost zero. She likes doing tours, like Viking and Gate1. I like to plan my own itinerary, and I’m known for my planning “skills.” Suggestions?

Mom is active and relatively healthy, but doesn’t do as well, respiratory wise, with hills & stairs. She did Machu Picchu, but that was before this respiratory issue kicked in. As long as the terrain is flat, she’s a dynamo.

Considering making most of the plans, then using something like The Tour Guy, when we’re there? I looked into the Rick Steves 7-day tour, but that could be a bit too tough for her. Plus, I’m not sure that we would want 7 days just in London. I would love to go to Scotland (Edinburgh) or Ireland, if it doesn’t make things too crazy.

Getting to LHR on a Sunday

I’m based in SW London and have a 9am flight this Sunday. I have tried finding Sunday tube opening times as I understand it opens later that day, however different sites/apps have given me differing information. Does anybody know when exactly the Notthern/Piccadilly lines start running this Sunday (northbound)? And whether I should just consider an Uber instead. For context it would take me roughly 50mins by car to get there, and I am aiming to get there by 7am.

Wife 40th in London next week

Hi

I will be staying in London for work between 26th and 28th May (next week). Sandwiched between this (27th) is my wife's 40th birthday. Whilst I am a slight monster for being at work, I have taken the 27th off which means we have the evening of the 26th and all day 27th to do some nice things.

Staying in St Paul's area so after suggestions for nice dinner (and breakfast on her birthday!). Things to do etc

She quite fancies afternoon tea, but really after a nice day of sightseeing and mild spoiling

Shes not very high maintenance and would rather something cool/interesting than extravagant so any ideas welcome

Wardrobe- unseasonably hot!

The temperatures I see for next week are, in my limited experience, unseasonably hot. I see highs of 31C.

Was planning to have mostly pants, but thinking now about dresses. Are shorts generally accepted in restaurants when it is this hot?

Any other tips? I assume most museums will be air conditioned.

Planning to walk around central London one day and go to Windsor another.

Thanks!!!

Best way for family of 11 to travel around London?

Hopefully this is specific enough because I have been recommended to outright just get two Black Cabs to maximize ease of travel and that the typically high extra cost of a Black Cab is mitigated somewhat by filling them up with people.

This is all for travel within the inner boroughs K&C, City of London, Westminster etc. but with a sizable group that includes a few children around 9-10 that it would be worth the extra 20-30 USD a day to go that route versus an Uber or the Tube.

The itinerary is generally going to an area via transport and then staying there all day until we need/want to take go home later in the evening.

So in this scenario a few specific questions:

  1. Is there a best most cost effective way to get Black Cabs?

  2. Is it easy to get Uber XLs as an alternative?

  3. Getting to our location is very time sensitive but home not so much. Would it be reasonable to use City Mapper and just tube home after 9PM? Any safety concerns at that time?

Thanks a bunch in advance for any thoughts on this.

Should I use same payment method for entire family?

Hello,

I read and watch every now and then that I must use the same card or phone pay method to enter and exit the rides. Can I do for the whole family? Tap in 4 times and then tap out 4 times for a family of 4?

In London for one night, where to stay and where to go?

We have a very short layover in London from Sunday 5/31 at 10:45pm to Monday 6/1 at 1:35pm. We are a couple in our 30s visiting for the first time.

We are deciding where to stay and considering Paddington but open to other options.

We want help planning a simple, realistic plan that includes the best area to stay for easy travel from Heathrow and back, whether it is worth going into central London for a short night out or if we should stay near our hotel, a morning plan focused on parks, riverside walks, architecture, good coffee and food stops that do not require much travel.

We want something romantic efficient and memorable without overplanning or wasting time in transit. Please help me plan! Thank you in advance.
