Cat CKD (+ other medical) costs are too high, about to give up
Some time ago, our cat got diagnosed with a bunch of issues (in no particular order): GI inflammation, hyperthyroidism, chronic kidney disease. His condition got so bad at one point that he stopped eating for a bit and barely moved; I was sure he was going to die. After many vet stays, he's since recovered but to this day, we go nearly every week or every other week to the vet to get fluids/injections and occasional tests. I've spent around $34,000 dollars in 20 months.
It's (obviously) unsustainable. I looked up online that subcutaneous fluid can be given at home but the vet says it's not in their policy due to some previous incident. We brought up costs multiple times but it doesn't feel like it's improving.
Each appointment is around 300-400 for fluids + injections (famotidine, vitamin B12, polyflex, metoclopramide). With tests like blood tests or imaging, it ends up at 1000. Im typing this after having another $1000 appointment (ultrasound) with the vet and another appointment in a few days.
What do you think the best course of action is? Should I try to find another vet that can prescribe more at-home care? Or just give up on going altogether and just let this cat live the rest of their days with whatever kidney food I have left? 34k is tbh already past a reasonable threshold for me but it's been hard to draw a line
