I’ve been experimenting with exploring multiple versions of the same scene while planning stories, and it’s honestly changing how I write

I noticed that whenever I outline stories, I usually lock myself into one direction too early.

So recently I started experimenting with taking a single important scene and exploring multiple possibilities before deciding what becomes “canon.”

For example:

  • one version where the betrayal is intentional
  • one where it’s a misunderstanding
  • one where the character sacrifices themselves instead

What surprised me is that some of the strongest story ideas appeared from variations I never originally planned.

It also made my characters feel more “alive” because I started noticing how different reactions completely changed the emotional direction of the story.

I’m curious:
Do any of you explore alternate scene directions while planning, or do you prefer sticking closely to your outline from the beginning?
