Australia Med or Mech Eng at Waterloo

Hi everyone,

I’m currently a grade 12 student and as you can probably guess from the title I have both the chance of going to Australia for medicine or Waterloo for mechanical engineering. Quite honestly, medicine has always been a dream career for me, however this is a complicated decision. For reference, these are my stats and the factors for each choice

Stats:
- 97.8 avg (valedictorian)
- president of three clubs
- kumon math graduate (top 300 ranked globally at one point)
- kumon math instructor
- hospital volunteering
- other things but these are the main ones

Australia Med
- chance to become a doctor (more pay then engineering)
- I’ve always wanted to become a doctor
- 500k in debt (some parents will pay for, I would imagine I would be left with 350k after 6 years there)
- coming back to Canada is not guaranteed through residency matching (even tho the match rate for Australian IMGs is 81% in Canada— highest of all)

Waterloo Mechanical Engineering
- not exactly the career I want, I feel I would be forcing myself to be passionate about it, which is bad because nearly all engineers at Waterloo are extremely passionate (which is why they are successful)
- essentially no debt or very little that I could pay off through my internships
- likely not going to earn as much as a doctor, will prolly regret not pursuing my passion

I just wanted yall thoughts on this decision, any advice, etc.

Waterloo Mech Eng or Medicine?

Hi everyone,

I wanted some advice on the situation I am currently in. As you can probably guess by the title, I hold an offer at Waterloo for mechanical engineering. However, when I entered grade 12, I was dead set on pursuing medicine, with me basically being forced to apply to engineering by my parents as a back-up.

I applied to both queens and McMaster health science both of which I got rejected from. This was quite shocking to me, as I thought both of my supplementary applications went well and I had good stats as well. For reference, here they are:

- 97.8 avg (group b)

- valedictorian

- Kumon Math Instructor

- president of three clubs at school

- book donation passion project

- hospital volunteering

- other things but these are the main ones.

i understand that you can pursue medicine from any program and I do hold an offer in a backup program at the university of Alberta. But quite honestly, if I cannot get into these schools, the difficulty for getting into medicine is going to be of similar difficulty (maybe slightly easier).

I know the earning potential for engineering is probably less than a doctor (depending on how my career ends up). Going into medicine interests me more but I also do not wanna get stuck in endless applications cycles as I don’t think I could mentally take that.

which option should I choose and why? Thank you for reading all this btw 😭

How do people become EMTs, phlebotomists, or Lab assistants?

Hi everyone, I’m currently in grade 12 looking to go into medicine and understand that gaining clinical hours is vital to presenting a good application but also understand if medicine is right for me or not. I currently volunteer at a hospital but I don’t really have much patient interaction (I work as a Wayfinder).

I always see people becoming EMTs, phlebotomists, or lab assistants because there you can actually gain clinical experience. However, I’m confused on the path of becoming one. They all require certifications which in the schools I am looking at are over a year long. It just doesn’t make sense how I am supposed to balance my regular classes for my major next year and have to also go to another university to become certified as an EMT for example. Am I looking at something wrong? I would also appreciate if anyone could explain their journey of getting one of these roles. Thank you!
