UFT vs not joining

A few untenured teachers have been told on several different occasions not to get involved in discussions at our meetings because we are untenured and can be fired for "a leaf falling" as well as basically nothing.

One untenured teacher asked at a recent meeting what is the point of paying dues if we are not protected. This is a message that has come from higher ups in the union as well as Chapter leaders and admins.

So can someone tell the untenured teachers what is the benefit for paying union dues despite being told we are unprotected until tenure. What other benefits do we get, and please spare me the we are unified bit, because we are not.
