Classroom Set Up

I know it’ll be different building to building but I wanted to see when some people on here are allowed to go in to set up? I still haven’t heard and am getting anxious😅

Is it still possible to land a position (PE) this late into the summer?

For context I graduated a few years ago with my masters, unfortunately have been unable to sub as I have a full time 9-5 job outside of education. Are my chances pretty slim? Should I try to sub this school year to increase my chances of getting hired? I’ve applied to between 15-20 schools, only one interview

Did you take a study sabbatical?

Hi! Did you take a study sabbatical? What was it like? Besides attending classes, what did you do with your time? Anything you now wish you had done during the sabbatical, but didn’t?

Career change

I'm trying to find the most affordable route to becoming certified to eventually teach in NY. Context I want to do elementary education and I have Bach degree and I’m NOT in NY but moving there next year to be with family. Please help! I want to be able to apply to job for next school year. Any master programs that I can get a masters and certification now before moving back to NY ?

I've looked into programs like NYC Teaching Fellows (won’t work as I’m trying to pursue a masters now and I’m not in NY until next year) I'm having trouble figuring out which paths actually make sense if my end goal is teaching elementary school in NYC. For those of you who have gone through this process, what route would you recommend?

Potential salary placement for an out-of-state teacher

I’m entering my ninth year of teaching, and eyeing a shift to NYC at some point in the next couple of years. The salary lanes/PD requirements look a bit different from what I’m used to reading, so I just want to clarify where I would fall.

I have a bachelor’s degree (151 credits), master’s (50.5 cr.), and a CAGS (21 cr.). Those numbers are a little weird, but I’m not sure if that matters (I’m currently in the farthest-right lane for my Massachusetts district, but I know some places have credit requirements for certain lanes). I am eligible for a reciprocal NY license in my subject, if that matters.

Thanks everyone!

Salary step chart reading help

Hi everybody- quick question. My salary application system says that I am currently at MA1A, but payroll is reflecting the BAC1 salary in the portal. Is this because I am a new hire and haven’t started yet, and this will automatically adjust? Thank you!

OPI Background Check - Advice Needed

Hi! I'm supposed to be starting with the DOE sept 8th and I accepted the job back in June. Been on background check step in applicant gateway literally since then. I read that it could take a while, but I did reach out after 3 weeks and someone contacted me to ask follow up questions (I answered I was fired from a job during a probationary period a couple years ago). Didn't do anything bad or illegal and was fired without cause. I thought that giving them the additional info was what they needed to push my application through. Now it has been two weeks since that follow up and still my application hasn't cleared. I wrote again but no response yet. I'm losing my mind a bit here. I just lost my insurance from my last job and really need my staffing to go through so I can apply for benefits and get paid on time. I have friends that have all applied later than me and have been cleared. My question is this - should I go to the DOE in person to try to clear this up? I'm at my wits end. My school has reassured me that I'm still hired there but this is getting ridiculous.

TLDR - should I go to the DOE office in person to follow up about my background check after waiting 2 months for clearence?

Does anyone else deal with coworkers who won’t stop texting over the summer?

Or ambitious teachers planning meetings that admin didn’t even initiate DURING summer without mention of per session pay? So frustrating and annoying. I ignore many times but they don’t seem to get the message.

EDIT: everything school related is muted on my phone but even with muting I still see the text notification when I open my messages to text other friends and I’m just like god damn. Also it’s not really a group chat problem. I just wanted to know if there’s anyone in the same boat as me or how normal it is in the DOE 🥳

How many hours a day do you normally teach and what is your typical schedule like?

I’ve been in the DOE for five years now, and I teach 4 hours and 15 minutes a day. I usually have one 50-minute prep, followed by two teaching periods, then lunch, followed by two more teaching periods and a C6 period, which is considered my common planning time.

I was looking back at an old teaching schedule from when I worked at a charter school, and can you believe I only taught for about 3 hours a day? I had two prep periods and a separate period for meetings. My workday was longer, and the demands were definitely higher, but I actually spent less time teaching.

A+ credits

Hi everyone, I was wondering if I had 5 college credits towards a special education certification and was issued it- is it only the 5 credits that count towards MA+30, or does getting the certification automatically put me in that category.
I am a new teaching to the DOE so I am confused how this works. Thank you!

Payroll portal

I’ve been trying to set up direct deposit. I am able to log in to my payroll portal successfully, but when I get to the second login screen, I’m told that my information is incorrect. What can I do to solve this problem? This has been going on for months in which I have no access to payroll portal

secondary teachers: is it normal to still not know what you’re teaching by this point in August?

this is my third year as a high school teacher in the DOE, just curious because it is currently august 18th and no one at my school has any inkling of what they might be teaching this year. at my school they switch it up a lot year to year so it isn’t just assumed you’ll be with the same grade

last year we didn’t get our schedules until august 21st. the vet teachers at my school said we never find out until the end of august, but i feel like we should know by June so that we can have the summer to plan? just curious if this is common practice at other schools

Motherhood / Working in DOE

I have two questions listed at the bottom, but I wanted to provide some background first.

My career initially started in education with substituting in college and then I “volunteered “ with City Year for two years and I worked at Success Academy for 3.5 years on the operations team. Since then, I’ve transitioned into sales roles, but after recently having my second child, I’m looking for a career and schedule that align better with both of my kids. I also really miss being part of a school community and being around students.

One challenge is that I don’t have a formal teaching degree, and we won’t be moving back to NYC for another year. I’d love to use this time to take the right steps so that I can position myself for a teaching role with the NYC DOE when we return.

What can I do over the next year to prepare myself and increase my chances of getting a teaching position with the NYC DOE, especially given that I don’t have a formal teaching degree?

And, for those who currently work as educators in the NYC DOE, what has your experience been like balancing the demands of teaching with motherhood and family life?

Will this affect my onboarding?

When I was filling out the background questionnaire a while back, I (perhaps stupidly) clicked 'yes' on the question that asked if I had ever had a teaching license denied. I did, but that was because I had to apply for the license to figure out which courses I needed to take to fulfill it. Obviously, the license was denied; they told me which courses I needed to take. I have since taken the required coursework and now my certification for that license is pending (this was for an additional certification. The cert I was nominated for, I am fully certified in).

Super frustrated because I'm reading that my onboarding might now take 1-4 weeks to complete. I did briefly explain in the questionnaire that the 'yes' was because of missing coursework. Will the 'yes' on my questionnaire affect how long it'll take to complete my onboarding? Has anyone ever been in this situation or something similar?

For reference, I completed my I-9 today and I'm now on the background investigations step.

Pay Schedule

I finished my masters +30 using Aspdp and my new salary was confirmed in july for MA+30 C6 ($84,000). I just did the UFT salary calculator and it said I am eligible for MA+30 C6 PD, which is $91,000. Does anyone know anything about this? What is the difference between these two columns on the salary schedule? And who should I contact about it?

Pearson and NYSTCE

OMFG I HATE THEM.

I’m sorry, but I had 3 tests scheduled yesterday at 9:30am in Westbury. I prepared, showed up a half hour early, only to be greeted by the rudest worker I have ever encountered. She told us the system was down and no one could test. Initially told us to wait 30-60 minutes to see if it would work, then after 45 minutes passed and some
Very nasty words exchanged between herself and another woman who needed to take a test, she kicked everyone out and called the police to remove us. Truly truly the most insane thing i have ever experienced.

Called Pearson, and they said the worker didn’t note anything about an outage, and that nothing shows on their end and so until that is submitted, they can’t do anything for me. Also called NYSTCE, which omg why is it impossible to get a human on the phone, and they were even worse. “Sorry mam I don’t mean to be unsympathetic to your situation, but all you can do is fill out a complaint and file for a potential reimbursement to enter so you don’t have to pay for the test again but it could take 4-6 weeks, so you probably should just pay for the test and then try to get your money back later.” Like nope. I don’t have ANOTHER $180 to shell out. WHERE IS THE ACCOUNTABILITY? I just can’t get over the lack of ownership to their mistake and that it’s my burden to be on hold for two hours to just be told, sorry can’t do anything.

Between dealing with these offices and the DOE and the UFT, and all the hours I have spent on hold listening to stupid hold music, my god it’s taken years off my life.

If you’ve made it this far, I’m sorry you’re still reading this 😂
