OPI Background Check - Advice Needed

Hi! I'm supposed to be starting with the DOE sept 8th and I accepted the job back in June. Been on background check step in applicant gateway literally since then. I read that it could take a while, but I did reach out after 3 weeks and someone contacted me to ask follow up questions (I answered I was fired from a job during a probationary period a couple years ago). Didn't do anything bad or illegal and was fired without cause. I thought that giving them the additional info was what they needed to push my application through. Now it has been two weeks since that follow up and still my application hasn't cleared. I wrote again but no response yet. I'm losing my mind a bit here. I just lost my insurance from my last job and really need my staffing to go through so I can apply for benefits and get paid on time. I have friends that have all applied later than me and have been cleared. My question is this - should I go to the DOE in person to try to clear this up? I'm at my wits end. My school has reassured me that I'm still hired there but this is getting ridiculous.

TLDR - should I go to the DOE office in person to follow up about my background check after waiting 2 months for clearence?

Practicing digital minimalism while living without a car in the city

Hello! ive been thinking a lot lately about practicing digital minimalism and I really want to make the change. My bf doesn’t want me to get a dumb phone for safety reasons and I respect that, so I want to turn my iPhone into a dumb phone. I see on this community a lot of people talking about shutting down their phones to just phone/text/camera. I would love to do that, but the problem is, I live in nyc and frankly, I use a lot of apps just for transit purposes (uber/lyft, citibike, checking for the next train, buying train tickets, etc). I even use Apple Pay to get on transit everyday. I also just have other things in my life that I frequently control with my phone. For example, I have an app that changes the color of my lights and I often use my phone as my smart tv remote. I have to use an app to pay for laundry in my building. my friends and I use venmo, and I’d like to keep some nonsocial media apps such as books/audible/podcasts. I guess what I’m saying is, realistically, practicing digital minimalism is going to be really hard for me, which I know is true for everyone, but I guess I’m wondering if anyone has the same experience and lives in nyc or somewhere similar or uses their phone as a payment method or remote control the way I often do. Or maybe I’m asking permission to still be a part of this community while needing all these other apps. In a perfect world I really do wish I could have a dumb phone, but I just know it isn’t realistic. Does anyone else practice digital minimalism and keep apps like venmo and Uber? Any and all thoughts appreciated. Just wanted a space to get some perspective on my concerns. Thank you all for your contributions to this sub!

Did everything right and still didn’t get the apartment

Hi! I came to rant and also ask advice. A rental agency sent me a video of an apartment in bedstuy before it hit the market and I fell in love. Sent in all my papers beforehand and applied immediately. We saw it the day it hit the market and applied as soon as we saw it. We were the only people to see it in person. This was on Wednesday and on Thursday they called saying they wanted to have us approved by the evening. No response, then Friday they say the landlord is reviewing other applicants. I’ve been pestering and pestering about our interest but I just found out they went with someone else. I don’t know what to do. Me and my roommate are teachers so it’s not like we are rich, but we have good credit and can provide a guarantor. She works part time but I work full time. I just feel like if we did everything right and didn’t get it, will we be turned away everywhere? I asked why we weren’t selected but no response. They went from being so nice and attentive to total ghosts. What can we do differently to get an apartment?? Is it even worth trying to get a two bedroom? Context: I live on the bedstuy/bushwick border and want to stay there for work.

D75 Demo Help!

Hi! So I just got invited for a demo for a D75 school and I'm nervous because I've never demoed in a new school before and I really want this job! Does anyone have any tips? Or anyone who currently works in a D75 school know what they are looking for? I have experience working with students on the spectrum but still don't know what it'll be like walking into a new environment. Any and all tips will help, thank you!

edit: for 8:1:1 class grades k-2

ISO 2 bedroom in BK for August 1 move in

I know it's early but I want to get a head start on finding a place! I'm looking for a two bedroom for me and my roommate in brooklyn for under 3k. We currently live in bedstuy/bushwick and would be willing to stay there, but also willing to explore crown heights, prospect lefferts, prospect park south, kensington, ridgewood, williamsburg, greenpoint, or, if a miracle strikes, somewhere like park slope, clinton hill, prospect heights. Basically, just looking for an apartment for a good price somewhere in north/central brooklyn. If anyone has any advice, leads, ideas, etc. please feel free to reach out!

Hello! I'm a special education teacher getting my degree at hunter and applying for schools with the DOE for the first time with my internship certificate. I'm trying to get my application in for the DOE by tomorrow. How long does it take to find a job? What is the likelihood of finding a job using the DOE job board? It would be really nice to know I'm employed somewhere else before the year ends, if anyone has any experience please let me know! I'm assuming because I'm special ed that there will be a lot of opportunities, but I'm just not sure.
