Has anyone taken short term disability or the like for ankle surgery?

In a very fun plot twist/s this summer, I rolled my ankle on a hike and required ankle surgery. I just learned that I won’t be able to drive until the end of September, and I can’t get to my school by public transit. I think I want to uber in or arrange rides from a colleague, but am reaching out here to learn about my options. Has anyone taken short term disability for something like this and was it an easy process? Thank you, enjoy the rest of the summer everybody

Email states they’re looking for a full-time teacher

But later revealed it’s a long term sub position in the interview. Bruh. I know subs don’t come out of their budget. They want someone to do a full-time work without the full-time pay. Most subs who become a sub won’t do that. These schools are notorious for stringing people along to keep them as forever subs rather than hiring full-time to save money.

How many hours a day do you normally teach and what is your typical schedule like?

I’ve been in the DOE for five years now, and I teach 4 hours and 15 minutes a day. I usually have one 50-minute prep, followed by two teaching periods, then lunch, followed by two more teaching periods and a C6 period, which is considered my common planning time.

I was looking back at an old teaching schedule from when I worked at a charter school, and can you believe I only taught for about 3 hours a day? I had two prep periods and a separate period for meetings. My workday was longer, and the demands were definitely higher, but I actually spent less time teaching.

PD I don't feel comfortable with

My new admin sent me some PD coursework. They had mentioned it in my interview and I didn't think too much into it, but now I'm conflicted. I'm teaching upper level high school science, but the PD is specifically for middle and elementary school grades. I realize they sent me this because I can complete the PD and the school gets free materials, possible school trips, and funding, but for me it seems like a big fat lie and a waste of my time, with 30+ hours mandated PD to receive the benefits.

It is asking me in the application which grades I teach, with no option for high school, and asking me which Regents I align to, which is obviously none of them. I don't teach bio or earth science, so even the middle school options for PD are just unrelated. Plus, I'm seeing that they request copies of standardized test scores from students to track improvement, which I obviously wouldn't be able to provide unless admin whips something up. I honestly have no problem buying most of my own materials if this is why they want me to do it, as I've done that for years, but this is my first year in the DOE and idk how common this is? Would these even count toward my hours required for my professional certification (I'm still on my initial)?

EDIT: They had told me it was middle school training in the interview, but I didn't know I'd have to lie on the training application. That is the part I'm most uncomfortable with.

I-9 Verification

This probably isn't a big deal, but how important is it to take care of your I-9 verification ASAP? I was nominated for a position about a month ago but haven't been able to find the time for the I-9 verification appointment... But a lot of schools haven't even hired yet, so there are lots of teachers who haven't gone through the process, right?

Teacher vacancies

Hi!

This might be a long shot but does anyone know of Bronx elementary school openings? Specifically, early childhood?

I’m looking to transition into the doe. I’m in my last year of teaching and in the process of trying to obtain my internship certification. However, my school is requiring that I have a position in line first (which sucks).

Thinking about giving up

I'm highly qualified, just moved to NYC from another state and have been trying to get my licensed transferred for ~9 months (feels like it'll never happen at this point), and I accepted a job offer at the beginning of August which got rescinded. So for the last two weeks, when I could have been job hunting, I was out having a grand old time in the city. Some schools have reached out but they seem really desperate and not like a good fit. And the list of vacancies is pretty dry. I've gone to job fairs and emailed, called, and/or physically visited dozens of schools. Pretty much everywhere I get stonewalled: "Just email your resume," "There's nobody here who can talk to you," etc. At one of the job fairs, there were at least a dozen other candidates in my certification area (ELA 7-12). And we're all competing against each other for these few spots. It's bleak.

I understand having a positive attitude and that I never know what's gonna happen, but I've jumped through so many bureaucratic hoops at this point that I don't really have any energy left. I'm angry at everyone I talk to. How's everyone else's search going

If I get an email that I’m eligible for a TOT award, what is the likelihood of actually getting it?

Trying to decide if I can afford to go to grad school this fall. This award would probably be the deciding factor. I did get an email that I’m eligible, but I don’t want to enroll in grad school and then have them lose funding and not give it to me or something. Thank you!

Will this affect my onboarding?

When I was filling out the background questionnaire a while back, I (perhaps stupidly) clicked 'yes' on the question that asked if I had ever had a teaching license denied. I did, but that was because I had to apply for the license to figure out which courses I needed to take to fulfill it. Obviously, the license was denied; they told me which courses I needed to take. I have since taken the required coursework and now my certification for that license is pending (this was for an additional certification. The cert I was nominated for, I am fully certified in).

Super frustrated because I'm reading that my onboarding might now take 1-4 weeks to complete. I did briefly explain in the questionnaire that the 'yes' was because of missing coursework. Will the 'yes' on my questionnaire affect how long it'll take to complete my onboarding? Has anyone ever been in this situation or something similar?

For reference, I completed my I-9 today and I'm now on the background investigations step.

DOE Salary Step Question

Hey everyone! I’m transitioning into the NYC DOE and trying to figure out what salary step/differential I may qualify for.

I’ve been a lead/acting teacher for 7 years in a preschool ICT setting through a private organization/CBO, working primarily with students with disabilities (preschool ICT) I also have my Master’s in Special Education/General Education.

I’ve heard the DOE may credit prior private-school/CBO experience. For those who went through this, how many years were you credited, and what proof did you have to provide? Would an employment verification letter with my dates, title, full-time status, and teaching responsibilities be enough, or do they require things like W-2s/pay stubs?

Trying to make sure I get all the experience credit I’m eligible for!

Not sure what to do anymore

Hello to anyone reading this. This is my first type of post like this but I just wanted to see if I could get some help or guidance. I have been applying to teaching positions all summer now and have barely gotten any responses let alone a single interview. I am extremely discouraged and am considering calling it quits from teaching all together.
Some advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Is any school still hiring?

I’ve been working for the DOE for 8 years now with an early childhood license. I’m so done with the toxicity in my school but haven’t had luck finding a different placement. Anyone know of any school still looking to hire for an early childhood position?

Motherhood / Working in DOE

I have two questions listed at the bottom, but I wanted to provide some background first.

My career initially started in education with substituting in college and then I “volunteered “ with City Year for two years and I worked at Success Academy for 3.5 years on the operations team. Since then, I’ve transitioned into sales roles, but after recently having my second child, I’m looking for a career and schedule that align better with both of my kids. I also really miss being part of a school community and being around students.

One challenge is that I don’t have a formal teaching degree, and we won’t be moving back to NYC for another year. I’d love to use this time to take the right steps so that I can position myself for a teaching role with the NYC DOE when we return.

What can I do over the next year to prepare myself and increase my chances of getting a teaching position with the NYC DOE, especially given that I don’t have a formal teaching degree?

And, for those who currently work as educators in the NYC DOE, what has your experience been like balancing the demands of teaching with motherhood and family life?

Tenure question

I worked as a NYC DOE teacher for one year and left (good terms, not dismissed) to go to Westchester for one year. Now back at DOE for coming year and do plan to stay. Is there any way to apply/appeal for the one year to count towards tenure?

Thank you for any valid information or suggestions.
