I'm trying to find the most affordable route to becoming certified to eventually teach in NY. Context I want to do elementary education and I have Bach degree and I’m NOT in NY but moving there next year to be with family. Please help! I want to be able to apply to job for next school year. Any master programs that I can get a masters and certification now before moving back to NY ?

I've looked into programs like NYC Teaching Fellows (won’t work as I’m trying to pursue a masters now and I’m not in NY until next year) I'm having trouble figuring out which paths actually make sense if my end goal is teaching elementary school in NYC. For those of you who have gone through this process, what route would you recommend?

I have two questions listed at the bottom, but I wanted to provide some background first.

My career initially started in education with substituting in college and then I “volunteered “ with City Year for two years and I worked at Success Academy for 3.5 years on the operations team. Since then, I’ve transitioned into sales roles, but after recently having my second child, I’m looking for a career and schedule that align better with both of my kids. I also really miss being part of a school community and being around students.

One challenge is that I don’t have a formal teaching degree, and we won’t be moving back to NYC for another year. I’d love to use this time to take the right steps so that I can position myself for a teaching role with the NYC DOE when we return.

What can I do over the next year to prepare myself and increase my chances of getting a teaching position with the NYC DOE, especially given that I don’t have a formal teaching degree?

And, for those who currently work as educators in the NYC DOE, what has your experience been like balancing the demands of teaching with motherhood and family life?
