Did you take a study sabbatical?

Hi! Did you take a study sabbatical? What was it like? Besides attending classes, what did you do with your time? Anything you now wish you had done during the sabbatical, but didn’t?

Lactoferrin works!

Hi! Just wanted to say that my ferritin was 9 in June, and the highest it’s been in the past few years with 65 mg ferrous sulfate twice a day was 16– I usually quit because my stomach hurt. Just got used to the tiredness, & lack of energy. The shortness of breath/dizzy feeling only came when exercising, & I’m in worse shape than years past, so attributed it to that.

Fast forward to June— I was targeted on social media for an iron study. I have an appointment with a hematologist, but it’s in the fall so I figured “what can it hurt, I’m already so low!” the study was using lactoferrin (by brand name——, made by ——-) and a small 5 mg of iron , both pills taken for 6 weeks once a day in the AM. I had never heard of lactoferrin, but figured it couldn’t be that bad and have asked my doctor about it, & they said they weren’t opposed. I was not allowed to supplement any other iron except for that 5 mg pill that they gave me each day. It was either a 50 mg or 100 mg pill (I’m not sure what study group I’m in, so not sure what amount I received).

Two weeks in, I was a 12 for ferritin. Ok, but I wasn’t impressed with a 3 increase. 4 weeks in, it doubled to 18! Definitely convincing! Still taking it for two more weeks, but i’m here to say that it’s worth trying lactoferrin! The kind I’m taking is human made lactoferrin, so not sure if it differs from the bovine kind, but I’m sold & already bought a bottle of the brand I took to see if post-study it comes up with the regular iron prescription my doc gave.

Anyway, this isn’t an ad, just saying that I was never told about lactoferrin & it seems like it really helps (so far) so it’s worth trying. Will update when I have the 6 week mark info!!

UPDATE: I deleted the brand name in the post, as some folks felt like it was marketing. Definitely not that, & I’ll be honest, I think said brand is expensive & I only bought it for post-study because it seems to work for me and I want to see how it works for me with my iron prescription post study.

My point is, I hadn’t heard of lactoferrin, & I don’t know why it’s not told to us by our primary care docs. It’s worth a shot trying it (any brand!).

Why do several of the men call their wives “baby” after like 3-4 days?

Just so icky. None of the women seem bothered by it, & they’ve known the guys like less than a week? It feels like very forced and every time I hear it, I want to cringe. The men who do it (Adam & Felipe) are especially icky, and the women (Tori & Marissa) have vocal fry and think it’s so endearing when the guys call them baby after only a few days. Is it just me, or is this just ick? I don’t want someone calling me that when they barely know me. What is with this cast?!?

1 quart Dutch oven available!

Hi! I’ve been on the hunt for a 1 quart Dutch oven after I didn’t buy the bear knob 1 quart two summers ago. I regretted it, & then couldn’t find it in cerise (red) in subsequent sales.

Well, it’s not advertised as FTT, so it’s not super easily visible, but by chance I saw it as was just looking at the larger Dutch oven prices for FTT.

So if anyone is interested, the 1 quart is actually now available on the Le Creuset site! It’s discounted, & not as low as the bear knob 1 quart, but if you’re interested: https://www.lecreuset.com/round-dutch-oven/21177US.html

John Jay: has anyone taken positive psychology or psychopathology in the Forensic Psychology/Forensic Mental Health program?

Title says it all. Have you taken those courses, or others, & what would you recommend during the first semester as far as electives or professors? TIA.

How is final average salary computed & what is the 10% rule?

Hi! Tier 4 person here & am 21 years within the DOE, but have been doing this work much longer, so ready to get out within 4 years. Possibly taking a sabbatical next year, as need a much needed break from the job. However, someone mentioned that there’s a 10% rule & that the sabbatical year could mess up my pension? Does anyone have any knowledge of this? (Uft folks said different answers). What is a 10% rule & how is the FAS calculated?

Also, while on the subject, if you’ve taken a sabbatical, would you recommend it, or is it just harder to come back to the job after?

TIA.
