Gauge swatch yarn

If I use a superwash wool for a gauge swatch, toss it in the washer and dryer, and the gauge doesn't come out like I wanted it to, is it possible to frog the swatch, soak it in water to get rid of the kinks, and reuse the yarn for another gauge swatch?

This is the 4th movement of Gliere's 8 pieces for violin and cello, and I cannot figure out for the life of me how to do the fingerings for the first bar of the second line in the image. I've tried 3 on the Bb and 1 and 2 on the other two notes, 1 on both F and C, or thumb, but none of it sounds very good. Suggestions? I'm desperate.
