Found this under my eaves after being away for a few weeks. Never seen anything remotely like it before or since.

EDIT: As some of you pointed out, it is a baldfaced hornet nest. Apparently this was in the early stages. Why they build it like that, no idea. My wife saw a huge black and white hornet about to go in so she nailed it with wasp killer, then sent a whole bunch up the tube and booked it. It's near the corner of the back deck so we'll (carefully) keep an eye on it and hopefully it won't progress. Thanks for all the comments, both truthful and otherwise. As always, Reddit rarely disappoints!
