Summer/bbq songs

Hello all and happy summer. Not all music serves the same purpose, in the case of the Gira Universe™️, good times and good vibes are rarely on the menu. But I’ve been adding tracks to my never ending warm weather playlist, and track Los Angeles:City of death from the latest found its way there. Not the cheeriest but it fits in. My question is, are there other songs that would fit into a party/“good vibes” playlist for summer activities

Still processing it obviously and will be digging into as much scholarship and criticism as I can. This is twined with The Sopranos for me as my favorite of the golden age giants. (breaking bad I watched as it closed out in my last two years of high school and was my favorite for a long time) I don’t think it’s as nihilistic as the sopranos ending was in my view. This finale on first glance, is saying that change is possible but not everyone will be able to. Change in the general sense is inevitable and you’ll be swept up in it regardless. I read the Don ending as especially sad. I do agree with the reading that his enlightenment was just the kernel to get back in the game. Does anyone who’s rewatched it have any changed perspectives? The peggy stan thing felt totally sincere and beautiful, the Joan thing while I think can be interpreted as a depressing in that she can never fully turn off as she says. It seems like she’s the person living on her own terms. And the Pete and Trudy thing, I feel like it’s just going to turn into the cycle of self destruction again. You can leave the city and try to patch things up like they once were, but the same temptations, and flaws are still there. Idk im just rambling. I loved it. Just wanted to get thoughts out.

Funny Songs/lyrics

Gira for as misanthropic and sad as his work can be, there are moments of (if even still overwhelmingly bleak) very funny. The song Failure off of White Light I played at least three times a week during the early days of the pandemic as some kind of bitter tonic lol. What are your favorite moments, songs that give you a chuckle or cackle?

2016

New cubs fan still getting my barrings here. Can watch all the tape of the game 7 miracle and all the watch parties but can’t imagine what it felt like as a life long fan. Anybody have any stories from watching that season and the win on the day?

What Season are You#15 Collapse into Now

Thank you all for indulging in some random fun bullshit. This feels like late Nov/Early Dec. Leaves are gone, sun down early, but ok enough for brisk walk.

Reissue

Just been cycling through the gira side projects and while yeah a few songs from his solo home recordings have made their way to comp reissues, this one remains out of print. Hopefully he decides to put it out again. Is there a piece of music from the gira universe, swans, live, side project that you would want to see reissued? Love will tear us apart single release when also.

What Season are You#14 Accelerate

Home stretch. Hopefully it’s been fun for all of you. Love this band. This is a return to form for sure. Places me in mid Sept early Oct for some reason. Can also see a Mid Aug, vegging out on the patio vibe

What Season are you #13 Around the Sun

Late Jan early feb vibes. The Holiday buzz is over, it’s dark at 4:30, it’s so cold you can barely stand outside and why can’t it just be baseball season already. Worst studio album sadly

Awesome Cover/Bad album/Don’t care

Never been a billy joel fan. But the cover to his album Piano Man has always fascinated me. Did he know he looked like a methed out member of queen? Was this a joke? Either way, it implies a very dark album we would not be getting lol. What are some other covers that are inexplicably awesome or creepy, from artists you hate/dislike

What Season are You #12 Reveal

Honestly this one is a late late july early August hazy thing. For me, it’s the time of year where summer is wearing thin, the heat is unbearable, and the novelty has worn off. Some interesting moments, but like Summer, it prattles on, and should wrap it up

Tortured/Dark Artists

Been reexamining michael jacksons work in light of well, everything. Obviously different musical traditions, socioeconomic backgrounds, but gira, and jackson both artists with some darkness you’d say. What are some artists whose pain/hidden angst are you fans of akin to Gira, and what artist(s) darkness has only come to light after a long period, and may add nee dimension to the work that may not have previously presented itself?
