Future Owner Questions

Long story short, I have very recently started to journal alot for self improvement reasons. I'm also looking to get away from my phone when possible. I have an administrative type job too and don't take alot of notes but do write todo lists for home and work.

I recently got the RPP Move. While I love the size for portability and even throwing it into my pocket, it does get a little daunting for long journal sessions. I also love the fact that is has color because I can cross out todo list items in Red or something and usually throw a super basic doodle on my journal pages each day. I am by no means an artist of any sort. I do little to no reading on the device and doubt that is a real need since I prefer audio books. Portability is still a high priority since I pretty much plan to bring my final device with me everywhere.

After watching and reading lots of reviews, I finally ordered the Nomad which should hopefully be here by end of week or early next. I know it does not have color and light which created so much hesitation, but with my primary use case being writing, it seems like a good option and still relatively portable. I also like that I can sync with my private home server since I like to keep my data secure. Even more so, I saw they have a DIY folio kit which is awesome since I love leather crafting and was already planning to make something for it and this just makes it even more premium.

Question:

I did not order a pen yet. I gotta be honest, the fact it doest come with one and they are rather expensive is hard to swallow, especially since one drop and the end can be ruined, plus no eraser which I have been using often on the RPP Move.

I know there is alot of personal preference but since I can't handle any of the pens in person to feel before purchasing, is it generally better to just bite the bullet and order from Nomad or is the 3rd party options with ceramic nibs (only a few out there), a better bet? When I place the order, most of them were sold out on supernote site but literally hours after ordering a few models like the Heart of Metal Samurai are available again. The pen seems like a big choice since the writing experience is one of the biggest selling points on this device.

Appreciate any insight and feedback about the pen and other factors mentioned above.

Pro / Move or Boox 5C?

I've really gotten into journaling the past week while I really invest my energy into self help & improvement work as of late. I can write a solid hour almost daily but often broken up into chunks throughout the day. I usually throw a super basic little doodle on each days entry.

I picked up the Remarkable Pro Move last week and have been using it very reliably and really enjoy the portability and writing experience. While it's certainly not perfect and has the screen flashes and stuff with the refresh, especially when using color or scrolling, it's not a major red flag for me. I figured it would also be good for work and basic home todo lists or notes and such too. However, size started become a concern with all the writing I was doing. Lots of scrolling and sometimes awkard positioning. I still love I can throw it in my back pocket even though it sticks out the top. It also fits well into a fanny pack. I'll goto the park and write or at a restaurant. I still have about 6 days to return it I think. I spent some time looking at the full size pro version but it feels too big for my needs and my emphases on portability. There is also lots of reports about screen yellowing and the floor display model was obviously more yellow which I hated. Seems like the move has risk of the same but company seems to have decent support for replacement. I just hate the hassle.

I got the Boox 5C today to try it out as a comparison. The size is not bad. I dont love the side bar taking up so much space but I can live. The biggest issue is it feels like alot that I don't need with the android software and everything that comes with it (i'm a long time apple user). I do see some benefit with work, being able to access my OneDrive and annotate some PDFs from Adobe Cloud which I do from time to time with home and work. I can't use some of the other features though like calendar memo app since works prevents us from connecting most apps to exchange account due to security risks (I work in healthcare doing administrative work). The writing experience isnt bad. The natural pen and paper feel is better on the remarkable for sure but not a deal breaker. Although it has more color options on the brushes, I don't like the shader / marker tools much. I don't do much book reading on it as I prefer audio books which I stream from my phone constantly. The 5C does have more tools though for writing and could insert images and stuff which might be good for some unique needs.

For those of you who primarily do writing and journaling, is the 5C overkill? What other features were you unexpectedly happy with on it? I looked at the supernote too but lack of color has prevented me from pulling the trigger and trying it. It's kind of dumb though since my doodles are so basic but even using a highlighter function just requires color for my brain to be satisfied.

Priority Needs

  • Handwritting
  • Portability - I can deal with a small sling bag but don't want to keep a full size backpack 24/7
  • I just really like color but doesnt have to be a full spectrum
  • Eraser on Pen (I know you can get more options with 5C, Remarkable just came with it and I use it alot)
  • Simplicity and easy to change between notebooks
  • Basic Notebook Organization
  • Notebook templates like Todo, lines, dots
  • Security/Privacy - Both device access and data storage
  • Reliable support when needed, especially for devices $500 +

I'll certainly use the 5C for a few days and see how it goes but i'm really stuck in the middle here. Would appreciate others feedback who had similar needs/experience. I've read through many posts but most people seem to use alot more features on the Boox than I traditionally need. My needs may evolve too but journaling and writing things down is the #1 priority no matter what.
