Need advice: Rent a car or take train from NYC to Philadelphia

I'll be over in June visiting for the World Cup and will be in NYC for a portion of it. My friend is leaving then I plan to go to just outside Philadelphia to visit family for a few days before flying home from NYC (JFK). My question is whether I'd be better:

  1. To go with my friend to JFK and hire a car to drive to Philly and use it for the few days I'm there, then drive back to JFK and fly home
  2. Take a train from NYC to Philly, then hire a car from that side and drop it off there after the few days then take train back to NYC for flight home

I was originally going to go for 2nd option but the trains are surprisingly expensive each way, like $150-200

So a friend and I are going to Boston for the World Cup this summer to watch Scotland, and we have a 5 day gap between games. We were thinking of going somewhere else that's not hosting any games to have a little break to explore. We've discussed so many ideas and are finally thinking either

  1. Flying to Tennessee for the 5 days, basing ourselves in Nashville and driving around

  2. Driving from Boston around the east coast, either up north towards Maine or towards Connecticut/NY.

Anyone been to both areas and can recommend one or the other? Or if there's any other decent options to throw in the mix. We're open to anything really, we like good food and just want to experience some of USA.
