Not taking anymore IKEA furniture assembly jobs after today

So I accepted an IKEA furniture assembly task through TaskRabbit today and honestly I’m pretty frustrated.

The job was a massive cabinet, probably 6–7 feet tall, with a huge number of pieces and several extremely large/heavy panels. I spent about 4.5 hours assembling it and still didn’t fully finish before the clients decided they would complete the rest themselves because they had to leave.

Total payout? $41.87.

That works out to roughly $9.30/hour before travel time, gas, wear and tear on tools/body, etc. Minimum wage in Alberta is $15/hour.

To make matters worse, some parts realistically required a second person because of the size and awkwardness of the panels. One of the client’s family members had to help maneuver pieces during assembly.

Am I crazy here, or are some of these IKEA assembly jobs priced completely unrealistically unless you’ve already built the exact same model 20 times before?

Because honestly, if this is considered normal compensation for large IKEA builds, I don’t think I’ll ever accept another one.
