DJI Osmo Action 6 + Mic 3: How Do Dual Audio Recording and Built-in Mic Audio Backup Actually Work?

1. Dual Audio Recording

How exactly does this feature work?

From what I understand, when this feature is enabled, audio is recorded simultaneously to the DJI Mic 3's internal storage and directly into the video recorded by the DJI Osmo Action 6.

My main question: Does the camera's built-in microphone remain active when this feature is enabled?

Is it possible that the DJI Osmo Action 6 mixes audio from the external DJI Mic 3 and the camera's built-in microphone, recording both sources into a single audio track in the video?

I've done a few tests. At first, it seemed like the audio in the video was coming from the camera's built-in microphone rather than the DJI Mic 3. However, my second test showed that the audio was actually being recorded through the external microphone.

So I'm still confused about how this feature works and which audio sources are being used when recording video.

2. Built-in Mic Audio Backup

There's also a feature called Built-in Mic Audio Backup in the DJI Osmo Action 6 settings, with three available options:

  • Off
  • Separate File
  • Video Audio Track

I'd like to understand exactly how each of these modes works and what the differences are.

3. Separate File Mode

As far as I understand, when Separate File is selected, the camera also records audio using its built-in microphone and saves it as a separate audio file.

However, I still have a few questions:

  • Does the main audio from the DJI Mic 3 continue to be recorded directly into the video?
  • Does this mean I end up with two files: a video containing audio from the DJI Mic 3 and a separate audio file recorded by the camera's built-in microphone?
  • Are there any limitations, drawbacks, or things I should be aware of when using this mode?

4. Video Audio Track Mode

I still don't understand what this mode actually does.

  • What exactly happens when this option is enabled?
  • Is the audio from the camera's built-in microphone recorded as an additional audio track inside the video file?
  • Does the DJI Mic 3 audio remain the main audio track?
  • Can I access and edit both audio tracks separately in a video editor

DJI Osmo Action 6 – Why does my footage jitter or shake at different camera settings?

Hi everyone!

I need some help understanding whether this is normal behavior and how to fix it.

I use my DJI Osmo Action 6 to film exhibitions while walking around and talking to the camera. I've researched recommended video settings and tried using configurations suggested by other vloggers.

However, I've encountered an issue: the footage jitters or shakes with almost every step, making it uncomfortable to watch.

I've tested the camera outdoors in daylight under cloudy conditions, as well as indoors, and the same issue occurs in both situations.

Important clarification about shutter speed:

I'm using Auto shutter speed with a manually configured range, rather than a fixed shutter speed. For example, I set the range from 1/50 to 1/8000, allowing the camera to automatically select the shutter speed based on lighting conditions.

The shutter speeds listed below refer to the minimum shutter speed I've configured, not necessarily the actual shutter speed used during recording.

Common settings:

  • Variable Aperture: f/2–f/4
  • White Balance: Auto
  • ISO: 100–800 (Auto)
  • EV: -0.3
  • Shutter Speed: Auto (manually configured range)
  • Stabilization: RockSteady
  • Field of View: Standard (Dewarp)
  • Noise Reduction: -2
  • Sharpness: -2

Tests where noticeable jittering occurs:

  • 4K 25 FPS — Shutter range: 1/25–1/8000
  • 4K 25 FPS — Shutter range: 1/100–1/8000
  • 4K 50 FPS — Shutter range: 1/100–1/8000

Tests where no noticeable jittering occurs:

  • 4K 25/50/100 FPS — Shutter range: 1/200–1/8000
  • 4K 25/50/100 FPS — Shutter range: 1/400–1/8000

Settings where jittering is minimal and the footage looks acceptable:

  • 4K 50 FPS — Shutter range: 1/50–1/8000
  • 4K 100 FPS — Shutter range: 1/100–1/8000

My questions:

What could be causing this jittering? Is it related to RockSteady stabilization, motion blur, shutter speed, or something else?

How can I eliminate or at least reduce this issue while maintaining natural-looking motion blur?

Am I using the wrong settings, or is this expected behavior for an action camera?

What settings would you recommend for walking and vlogging, especially when switching between indoor and outdoor environments?

Has anyone else experienced similar issues with the Osmo Action 6?

Another issue: dark horizontal bands indoors

I've also noticed dark horizontal bands appearing in certain indoor lighting conditions, particularly when filming gray or brightly colored surfaces.

The bands sometimes move, change position, or disappear entirely. I've attached a photo showing the issue.

Settings where this occurs:

  • 4K 25/50 FPS — Shutter range: 1/200–1/8000
  • 4K 25/50 FPS — Shutter range: 1/400–1/8000

I'm filming in Poland, where the power grid frequency is 50 Hz. I understand that this could be related to lighting flicker and shutter speed, but using slower shutter speeds seems to bring back the jittering problem.

So I'm trying to find a practical balance between smooth stabilization, natural motion blur, and avoiding flickering indoors.

Any advice or real-world experience would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
