I'm building OpenPocketCine! A free, open-source pro field monitor app for the Osmo Pocket 4/4P (LUTs, false color, waveforms, full camera control, no Mimo needed)

Hey everyone! 🎬

I wanted to share something I've been working on! OpenPocketCine, a full-featured field monitor app for the Osmo Pocket 4P (with support for the rest of the Osmo Pocket lineup hopefully coming soon).

The Pocket's built-in screen works in a pinch or for quick run-and-gun shooting, but for anything even slightly serious, gauging exposure on that tiny display is tough, especially without monitoring tools. So I built the monitoring app I wished existed!

Monitoring tools:

  • Custom LUTs
  • Focus peaking
  • False color
  • Zebras
  • Waveform, RGB parade, and vectorscope
  • RED cinema–inspired traffic lights

...and much more

Full camera control, no DJI Mimo required.

Start/stop recording, change settings, everything, the app completely bypasses the Mimo app. Media playback and downloading directly off the Pocket is also planned.

Bonus fixes:

  • Fixed the annoying inability to zoom in D-Log2, the app automatically dips from D-Log2 to D-Log to allow zooming (shown in the demo posted below)
  • A fix for the exposure shift is currently in progress (not demoed yet)

And the best part! it will be completely free and open source.

Cheers! 🎥

I’m Confused what to buy??

I’m going on a trip to Calgary-banff and all the places with my friends. We are going on a rv. I’m confused about getting a drone or something like osmo pocket 3. I don’t know what would be best there to shoot things. I want to capture the moments and trip. This is going to be a trip after one year to somewhere, especially in canada. I think I should go for pocket 3 because the drone is not allowed at most of the places where we will be going. But at the same time I have always wanted to get a drone for myself, not just for this trip. My phone is old(12pro), waiting for 18 pro. I don’t know what to do. I’m so confused!!! Please help me decide.

DJI Osmo Action 6 vs. GoPro Mission 1 Pro: Which one would you choose?

Looking for a waterproof action camera and am currently torn between the DJI Osmo Action 6 and the GoPro Mission 1 Pro. (Let me know if you recommend anything else)
Right now, I’m trying to figure out which of these two is truly worth investing in.
Our main hobbies include hiking, swimming Florida springs, kayaking, paddleboarding, and we are actively planning our first scuba diving and cave exploring trips.
I know both cameras require a proper dive housing to get down deep safely, but they bring completely different strengths to the table especially when dealing with the massive light drop-off going from open water into pitch-dark cave systems.
Convince me: what reasons do I have to pick the DJI Osmo Action 6 over the GoPro Mission 1 Pro, or should I go with the Mission 1 Pro instead?

Just Got the Action 5… Should I Already Be Looking at the Action 6?

I just got my Action 5, and honestly, it’s a really solid camera. The image quality is great, the battery lasts plenty long enough for me, and so far I don’t really have anything to complain about.
The problem is that I keep looking at the Action 6. That larger sensor and variable aperture are seriously tempting, even though I know I probably don’t need to upgrade already.
For anyone who has used both, is the real world difference actually noticeable enough to justify switching? Or should I stop watching comparison videos and just enjoy my Action 5? Feel free to give me a reason to upgrade,or talk me out of it lol.

How do you manage the large video storages?

I have the Osmo Action 5 and DJI Osmo Nano and I do my editing in capcut for Ipad. It sometimes frustrate me to no end that I run out of storage due to large file sizes. How do you manage this? Especially in travel videos?

My friends complimented my cooking once and now I have a food account

Had a few friends over last weekend and made short ribs for dinner. One of them tried it and said I should start posting the stuff I cook. And I actually did! I took that way too seriously, so now I have a food account with 4 followers lol.

I tried filming everything on my phone at first, but it was honestly kind of annoying. I kept moving the tripod around because it was either in the way or somehow still getting a terrible angle, and at one point I got butter all over my screen.

then I remembered I had an Osmo Nano sitting around and started sticking it wherever there was metal nearby. Fridge door, shelf above the counter, side of the range hood. It was actually way easier because I could just leave it there and keep cooking instead of constantly checking the shot.

The footage ended up being more fun than I expected too. Half of it is just my friends walking into frame and stealing pieces of food before I was done, that is quite funny right lol.

So apparently I make cooking videos now. no idea how this happened, but I guess there are more hobbies to accidentally pick up.

Dji osmo action 6 or 5 pro?

It’s my first action camera and I’m super stumped. Really would like a camera for recording daily activities, hiking, snowboarding, maybe some water sports and being able to talk to the camera. Is it worth it getting the 5 pro on sale? Or get the 6?

Should I buy the pocket 3 creator combo or save for the pocket 4?

Hey everyone! I’m studying journalism and looking for a reliable, portable camera. I found the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 Creator Combo for $499, which seems like a great deal, but I’ve also seen that the newer Pocket 4 has some worthwhile upgrades.
I’d mainly use it for reporting, interviews, short-form content, travel, and maybe YouTube—nothing too cinematic.
The Pocket 4 is around $700–800. Is it worth spending the extra $200–300, or would the Pocket 3 be more than enough for my use case?

My thoughts on the Osmo 360 as a creator

So I spent 3 years doing video editing for studioes before going out on my own about a year ago. Tried a bunch of cameras since then, but osmo 360 is a pretty recent pickup for me.

I feel like a lot of creators run into the same issue I did, which is getting stuck in a rut with angles. After making videos for a while, you realize you're just using the same few shots over and over and everything feels kind of repetitive. What I love about osmo 360 is how it completely bypasses those traditional camera limits. You don't have to lock in your frame before you hit record, you can just shoot and decide on your angles and crops later. Gives me so much room to be creative.

Plus, 360 lenses are just super fun in general. Things like the tiny planet effect, I've tried using it to shoot stuff like making it look like a person is walking on a tiny sphere, or that big-head effect, and grossly exaggerating the size of a bowl when eating. I've been seeing it show up in music videos lately, so you know actual industry pros are using this as a legit artistic thing now.

Anyway, curious if any other creators out there feel the same way about it?

Osmo Nano or Action for daily recording?

I’m really drawn to how small and light the Osmo Nano is, especially the detachable design. I’m just not sure how it actually feels different from using an Action. Is it mainly better for wearable POV shots, or are there other differences I should know before choosing?

Hi all, just bought the osmo 5 pro, going to disney florida in a week. Any recommendations or tips for taking photos or filming rides etc. And just wondering if you actually need to use the waterproof case or if the camera will be fine on its own in the watermark? TIA.

Pocket 4 in the US?

I don't have a way to go to another country to get the Pocket 4 and bring it into the US, so does that mean I'm just..screwed? Not allowed to have it now? I don't like buying used electronics, and there isn't any nearby that anyone is selling anyway, and I'm FOR SURE not buying a used electronic without being able to test it, so that means no used ones from another state that the person ships to me (that's a HUGE amount of money to gamble that you aren't being sent a broken item or something), so is it just "too bad you don't get to have this", then? Because buying used seems to be the only way anyone that can't go to another country just to buy a camera will be able to get one. It's like, PERFECT for my filming needs, but it's the ONLY version that the FCC decided just aren't allowed to be sold here.

And before anyone says it, I don't want the Pocket 3. I've seen battery tests, and I NEED that extra battery life. That's why I never got the 3 in the first place. Just that added hour makes it more worth it for me.

Fighting Between Action 6, Pocket 4, or alternative

I want to get a camera for my girlfriend to capture easy, high quality video content. Something she can just start up and capture high quality video and photo stills.

She's an architect, so a lot of content will be walkthroughs of jobsites and new buildings. She also does a lot of travel recording, so something that can get good photo shots and has good low light performance.

I was leaning toward a Pocket 4 or 4 Pro. She lives in Mexico, so I think it's legal for her to pickup there, but I'm concerned it might cause issues at customs when she travels to the US. Another concern is the durability. I don't want her to be too limited on where and when she can use the camera if the weather is a little adverse.

On the alternative, I was thinking an Action 6 (much easier to acquire) with a battery handle would be a good, robust option. Would it be near equal in quality to a Pocket 4? At least close enough that the durability outweighs the added video and photo quality of a Pocket 4/4P?

Anybody has any extra input? Maybe an Ace Pro 2 or Insta360 X6 are also good options?

Thank you for any help.

Got this today and I'm loving it already

I was stuck between this and the Pocket 3. Ended up buying this because it is more rugged waterproof along with amazing video quality. I'll get the Pocket 3 next month as well. Osmo action 5 pro is better than i expected it to be. The internal memory also is a great feature. It actually feels so premium and heavy in hands.

Osmo Action 5 pro

Hi everyone... I have an Action 5 Pro and I really like it... but I have a question about image sharpness. Often, the images seem a bit soft to me... I record in 4K at 30 fps...
Do you have any tips?
I would like to have sharp images that are suitable for posting on social media.
