GSD owners, do you use a treadmill for your dog? Motorized or non-motorized?

I have a 15-month-old, 68 lb female GSD and I’m considering adding a treadmill to her routine, mainly as another outlet for physical exercise and structured activity. This wouldn’t replace walks, hikes, training, sniffing, or outdoor time.
For those of you who actually use treadmills with your GSDs:

Do you prefer motorized or non-motorized/self-propelled, and why?
If you use a motorized one, what size/brand do you have?
How long is the running surface? I want to make sure she can fully extend her stride.
Have you noticed any difference in conditioning, energy levels, or behavior?
How often and how long do you typically use it?
Any safety concerns or things you wish you knew before buying one?
For younger GSDs, what age did you start incorporating treadmill work?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people with larger female GSDs around 65–75 lbs. I’ve been looking at dog-specific motorized treadmills, but I’m seeing mixed opinions about whether a slat/self-propelled treadmill is ultimately the better investment.

Would love to hear what has actually worked for your shepherd!

A Quiet Reminder to Trust Your Dog

On our family vacation to Lake Tahoe, California, my girl came with us because let’s be honest, I hardly go anywhere without her.
One morning we were out on our usual routine: train, feed, and let her handle her business. I was focused on her when someone began walking quietly behind us. The entire street was open on both sides, yet this older gentleman, wearing sunglasses and a light hoodie, was walking uncomfortably close to us.
My 14-month-old German Shepherd turned, gave a low growl, and let out one short warning bark.
It immediately pulled my attention away from training. I turned around and said, “You’re too close to us.”
Without saying a single word, he crossed the street. It was early morning, hardly anyone was around, and there was no reason to have been that close in the first place.
That moment stayed with me. Catcalling is disrespectful and disgusting, but it’s often the quiet ones you need to be aware of.
I’ve gained an entirely new appreciation for the German Shepherd. Iylah had my back that morning, just like I’ll always have hers. 🤍

Lake Tahoe

Hi all,
My spouse and I will be traveling to Lake Tahoe for the very first time for around 5 days. We will be accompanied by our GSD who is a fantastic traveler.
I’m looking for recommendations for hikes, swimming, food ideas/coffee spots. Also must see sights or dos within the area. We are staying in south Tahoe.
All recommendations are appreciated 😊

Mental Simulation

If you haven’t tried wrapping your pup’s food in a towel and tying it into a knot, consider this your reminder! 🐶
Mine spent about 40 minutes working on the first towel and another 40 minutes on the second. It’s been the perfect mental enrichment activity for a hot summer day keeping her engaged, tired, and happy without having to be out in the heat. ☀️🧠
