Battle Ground residents: How much are you willing to pay for political division at City Hall?

Battle Ground residents: How much are you willing to pay for political division at City Hall?

Republicans love to campaign on cutting taxes, fiscal responsibility, and making government accountable to taxpayers.

So let’s look at what that looks like in Battle Ground.

The City Council voted 4–3 to fire City Manager Kristina Swanson without cause. Her termination takes effect September 4, and the city is facing more than $300,000 in severance and benefits under her employment contract.

That’s your tax dollars.

And this comes on top of the growing costs of contentious meetings, divisive political battles and decisions that are creating instability at City Hall.

Even Councilmember Shane Bowman questioned how the special meeting was called, saying he had never seen a city manager fired this way and that other council members were not included in the process.

So when Republicans talk about being the party of fiscal responsibility and lower taxes, Battle Ground residents have every right to ask:

Where is the fiscal responsibility?

Where is the accountability for spending $300,000+ of taxpayer money to terminate a city manager without cause?

And where are our Republican elected officials and candidates when their allies are making these decisions?

Rep. Stephanie McClintock, Rep. John Ley, and the Republican Peter Silliman, candidate for Clark County Council who have supported or enabled this direction need to answer to Battle Ground taxpayers.

You cannot campaign on cutting taxes while standing by as local government racks up hundreds of thousands of dollars in unnecessary costs.

It’s about your money. Republicans claim to care about fiscal responsibility and helping working families, but their actions tell a different story. When taxpayers are facing a $600,000+ price tag for political decisions, and proclamations that only divide residents while families are struggling to put food on the table, we have to ask: Where are their priorities?

Battle Ground taxpayers deserve transparency, accountability and responsible government, not political chaos that comes with a six-figure price tag.

If they want to call themselves fiscally responsible, let's hold them to it

3 Question's With Wil Fuentes - Guest John Zingale S3E5 who is running for Clark County council position 2. As Ballots are coming out, we will post videos from both candidates and we ask everyone to vote in the primary's, We Need To Vote Michelle Belkot OUT

Please take a few minutes to watch and get to know the candidates. We will also be posting a video featuring his fellow opponent who are both challenging Michelle Belkot. You can hear from both candidates directly.

Primary elections are incredibly important. They help determine who will appear on the general election ballot, and historically, voter turnout is much lower than in November. That means every vote carries even more weight and can have a significant impact on the outcome.

We hope these videos help you make an informed decision when casting your vote.

🗳️ Don't forget: Ballots must be returned by August 4, 2026. Please vote, return your ballot on time, and make your voice heard!

Clark County Councilor Michelle Belkot focus of complaint filed with state Public Disclosure Commission

A complaint filed with the state Public Disclosure Commission alleges Clark County Councilor Michelle Belkot failed to accurately disclose contributions and expenditures related to her current run for reelection and also failed to disclose required personal financial information.

Vancouver resident and chair of the 18th Legislative District Democrats LaDonna Kirkpatrick filed the complaint on June 9 that cited missing information for Belkot’s husband, and incomplete or inaccurate information for fundraising and contributions.

The PDC’s F-1 form, or personal financial affairs statement, requires all financial information — such as bank accounts, employer information and wages, compensation from governmental agencies, real property valued greater than $10,000, etc. — be disclosed for the candidate and their immediate family members.

“None of the six F-1 reports filed by Michelle Belkot since 2021 include any income, assets, real estate, debt, lobbying activity or gifts connected to Michelle Belkot’s husband, Dennis Belkot, as required by law,” Kirkpatrick said in the complaint.

Additionally, Kirkpatrick said Belkot did not list the Felida home the couple jointly own nor did Belkot disclose any related mortgage information.

“Michelle Belkot not only did not list this property as owned by her and (her husband) but she also went to the trouble to claim that no property was owned in the state of Washington,” Kirkpatrick said.

Clark County property records list Belkot and her husband as co-owners, with the home valued at $785,000.

Kirkpatrick also cited concerns about Belkot’s fundraising activities. She said Belkot has been raising campaign funds through sites like GiveSendGo.com and Anedot.com, along with at least one in-person fundraising event, but it’s unclear whether the funds are being spent on campaign activities or paying for legal fees related to her April 2025 lawsuit against the county and fellow County Councilor Wil Fuentes over her removal from C-Tran’s board.

Kirkpatrick said funds from a second GiveSendGo campaign in 2026 were reported but there were some discrepancies that have not been addressed.

While contributions and donations from a March 26 kickoff fundraiser at Los Potrillos Restaurant in Vancouver were reported to the PDC, the complaint states expenses for the event were not reported.

“If the Clark County GOP or some other committee paid the expense of the kickoff fundraiser, those expenses should have been reported as in-kind (contributions),” Kirkpatrick said.

The PDC website shows $1,320.33 paid to Los Potrillos was reported on July 9.

Kirkpatrick said it’s unclear whether contributions are going to Belkot’s legal fees and that information should have been disclosed. She said more than $30,000 of Belkot’s legal fees were paid by the Clark County Republican Central Committee, which was disclosed on PDC reports filed by the Republican party. But other sources — like the unpublished GiveSendGo campaign — are far less clear.

When contacted by The Columbian for comment, Belkot said she has responded to the PDC and would wait until that response has been published.

“When an elected official fails to disclose required financial information, such as a spouse’s assets, a home, or other reportable interests, it undermines the transparency system that allows voters to evaluate potential conflicts of interest,” Kirkpatrick said.

She said financial disclosure forms are designed to publicly show who may have financial ties that could influence decision-making, but when that information is missing or incomplete, voters lose the ability to fully understand potential conflicts or personal interests.

“The result is reduced transparency, weakened public trust, and a diminished ability for voters to see who may be financially influencing an elected official’s actions or advocacy,” she said.

The outcome of the PDC investigation, which typically takes 30 to 90 days, will be posted on the agency’s website when complete.

Battle Ground taxpayers spent $37,543 on a single City Council meeting centered around controversial proclamations supporting ICE and condemning Antifa.

Battle Ground taxpayers spent $37,543 on a single City Council meeting centered around controversial proclamations supporting ICE and condemning Antifa.

What makes this even more troubling is that this wasn't something that simply appeared on the agenda. Public records show Mayor Eric Overholser personally approved advancing the proclamations and directed city staff to move them forward. City staff even raised concerns that the anti-Antifa proclamation did not fit the city's own standards for ceremonial proclamations because it functioned as a policy statement rather than a ceremonial recognition. Yet the mayor continued pushing the proclamation forward.

The mayor has publicly acknowledged that, as mayor, he had the authority to advance these proclamations and chose to do so because he believed they represented the city's position on these issues.

Meanwhile, Battle Ground families continue to hear that there isn't enough money for additional baseball fields, expanded recreation opportunities, or an aquatic center. Residents are told we must be careful with taxpayer dollars.

Yet taxpayers were left with a $37,543 bill for a meeting focused on national political issues that divided neighbors, generated protests, and brought national attention to our city for all the wrong reasons.

Leadership is about priorities.

Imagine if that same focus, energy, and taxpayer money had been directed toward projects that benefit every family in Battle Ground: youth sports fields, parks, recreation programs, and community spaces that bring people together instead of driving them apart.

Battle Ground deserves leaders who focus on solving local problems and investing in our community's future—not creating political spectacles that leave taxpayers footing the bill.

Battle Ground taxpayers deserve to know why more than $37,500 in city staff time and labor costs was spent in connection with the June 1 City Council meeting and the proclamation controversy.

Battle Ground taxpayers deserve to know why more than $37,500 in city staff time and labor costs was spent in connection with the June 1 City Council meeting and the proclamation controversy.

What's especially concerning is that city leadership was repeatedly warned that pursuing these divisive proclamations would consume significant staff resources, generate extensive public records requests, increase citizen correspondence, and require substantial administrative support. Despite those warnings, the Mayor chose to move forward.

The result? Thousands of taxpayer dollars spent on meeting preparation, public records requests, citizen communications, staff overtime, and administrative work surrounding a controversy that divided our community.

Whether you supported or opposed the proclamations, this raises an important question: Was this the best use of city resources?

Residents expect city leaders to focus on public safety, infrastructure, economic development, and the everyday needs of our community. When a single political controversy generates more than $37,500 in staff costs, taxpayers have every right to ask for accountability.

Leadership means considering not only the political consequences of a decision, but also the financial impact on the community that pays the bills.

Battle Ground city council to consider Antifa and ICE proclamations, prayer before public meetings

URGENT CALL TO ACTION — SHOW UP FOR BATTLE GROUND

Battle Ground City Council Meeting

Monday, June 1, 2026

5:30 PM

Battle Ground City Hall

109 SW 1st Street, Battle Ground, WA 98604

Ways to Attend:

In person at City Council Chambers

Virtually via Zoom (https://www.cityofbg.org/Calendar.aspx?EID=6581)

Watch the live stream

PLEASE READ:

We are asking everyone who attends to remain peaceful, respectful, and calm. Do not give anyone an excuse to distract from why we are there. Our presence should reflect the values we are fighting for: dignity, community, democracy, and inclusion.

This meeting matters.

Battle Ground has an enormous impact on the future of the entire 18th Legislative District. We cannot build Democratic victories in this district without building support and community in Battle Ground.

Right now, many residents are feeling unheard and isolated. Proposed proclamations supporting ICE, condemning “Antifa,” and introducing prayer into public meetings are moving forward while Pride proclamations and pro-LGBTQ recognition have been rejected. Many in our community see this as part of a broader effort to exclude voices and silence people who believe in equity, inclusion, and democracy.

We need people in the room.

We need voices.

We need bodies.

We need Battle Ground residents and neighbors across Clark County to know they are not alone.

Showing up on Monday is about standing with the people of Battle Ground and saying clearly:

We are here.

We see what’s happening.

We stand with this community.

And we are not backing down.

The Master’s Bible Church is organizing attendance as well, with many expected to arrive by 5:00 PM, so we encourage supporters to come early if possible.

June is going to be an important month in Battle Ground. This is the time to show up, build relationships, build coalition, and build the movement we need for the future of this district.

If you can be there — please come.

Bring a friend. Share this EMAIL. Spread the word.

See you Monday.
