Rebirth and Karma Are Gratuitous Concepts

I believe I understand the roles of rebirth and the karmic over from this life, and of karma and karmic carry over from this life, as motivators for us to live morally. I also see them as an improvement over the concepts of sin and hell. But to me they also seem nonessential. One can be motivated to contemplate the Four Noble Truths and to meditate and follow the Noble Eightfold Path for the rewards Now, in the Present, in this lifetime, without resort to Karma or rebirth in the next life. TBH, instinctively I don’t believe in them, but there’s no opportunity to talk with Buddha about them. So my questions are, am I obligated to believe in them? Why should I believe in them?
