Got a letter from a company called “securian financial” that looks like a quarterly statement for a rollover IRA. I never opened this account, but I did some research and saw sometimes rollover IRAs can get opened if you leave money a 401k with an old employer, for example. I tried looking the company up and calling the contact number and I did speak to a real woman but she said she’d transfer me to another department and then a robot just asked for the last four of my social and DOB and said they couldn’t find my account and routed me back into the auto dialer system.
The other thing that’s odd is that the letter came to my girlfriend’s house. We do live together but I keep my legal address at my parent’s house and all my banking mail and bills go there. I can’t recall putting down my gf’s house address for anything except an auto insurance policy that I took out last year.
Does anyone have an actual account with Securian financial? It seems like there is a real company that exists called Securian but they just do insurance and annuities, not IRAs. When I saw a URL from the letter appear in the Google search results I tried to click it (on my work laptop) and the company internet security firewall blocked it.
The whole thing feels extremely fishy. If it’s just a scam to get my personal information by tricking me into calling and talking to them/entering info on their website I guess I can just ignore it but I’m worried someone stole/is stealing my identity.
TL;DR: got a statement from a company called “Securian financial” for a rollover IRA that I never opened. Seems very fishy.
