June - Local Scoop

Hey Schaumburgers --- Here is a local scoop on our village. If you're new and curious to know what this is, dig back through this subreddit until you find my post from May 2025.

Short version: these are bite-sized updates on things generally not reported by the local paper, Facebook groups, and other sources of news.

If there are specific topics you want to hear about or you have feedback, feel free to send me a message or leave a comment.

At the bottom are some links if you are interested in knowing more about what the Village is up to.

This one is a very short one. A lot of meetings were canceled (some due to holidays) or they were mainly just projects being approved (boring stuff, like, “Yes, this department can sell their old truck.” “Yes, this contractor can pour the concrete.”)

Nonetheless, here it is:
———————————————————————————
Environmental Awards: two nominees for the Al Larson Award (recognizes those who take green actions by members of the community) showed they installed rooftop solar panels, a heat pump system, hybrid water heater, induction cooktop, energy-efficient appliances, EV charging station in garage, canning vegetables from their garden, and installing rain-barrels.

Business Shoutout: special attention was given to Bricks & Minifigs (1085 S Roselle Rd) during the Schaumburg Business Development Commission meeting. Was run by a disabled veteran and lifelong LEGO enthusiast, the desire was for the store to be more than just a retailer, but a true community hub for LEGO lovers of all ages. The store carries rare/retired sets, bulk bricks, collectables, and build-you-own options.

New Business: Approval was given to 7 Brew Coffee, a drive-through coffee business with no dine-in area, to be located at the former Bahama Breeze building. The building would be demolished for the new 7 Brew building and associated parking, drive-through lanes and landscaping. Other drinks include espresso based coffee, chillers, teas, energy drinks, sodas and smoothies.
Zoning history: the site was approved for Carlos Murphy’s restaurant in 1981. In 2000, it was approved for Bahama Breeze Restaurant.

Coffee with the Council:
•Regarding the Village’s water billing process, a resident expressed concerns it lacked flexibility for residents wishing to pay their bills before a mailed statement. They requested to have the ability to access it online, view current charges, and establish a payment plan that fits their schedule.

•Regarding a recent Daily Herald article discussing the possibility of the Village terminating the lease at the Trickster building, a trustee responded saying no proposal or recommendation to do so has occurred. However, there is currently an effort is limited to evaluating the possibility of establishing a Historical Museum, including a search for potential locations. Many more residents echoed concerns about the Native American Cultural Center being displaced as it provides programs and services to the community, veterans, teenagers struggling with substance abuses issues and other community members.

• Regarding treatment of piglets at Heritage Farm, a resident expressed concerns that the piglets would be sent to slaughter at the conclusion of the seasons. They manage to arrange sanctuary placement for four piglets and hoped this approach would become part of the future program.

• Regarding new bike paths, a resident noted appreciation for a bike path located along the pipeline corridor.

Local Scoop - May

Hey Schaumburgers --- Here is a local scoop on our village.

This marks one year of putting these posts together! A special thank-you to everyone who follows these and have expressed their appreciation. It’s the exact reaction I’d hoped for — residents getting excited about what’s happening in their local community.

Unfortunately, social media and the news make us believe we are too divided and enraged to trust or care for the people around us, and we are all together a grumpier people for it. Hopefully, these have offered (a splash, at minimum) a different story, that we all care for our community and there are real people (our literal neighbors) doing the hard, and often untold, overlooked work of making it better. Extend a thank you to Village workers, participate in local events, watch over your neighbors and consider what you can do for our community.

These have been fun to do and I plan to keep doing them as long as it’s wanted. Cheers and happy 70th to Schaumburg!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Village Board Meeting: Discussions were made by the mayor and trustees regarding what the name of the new Village Hall should be. The old building was designed by former Mayor Bob Atcher and was occupied by him for two years. He later moved in 1989 with his family to Kentucky before passing away in 1993. As Mayor Atacher had no involvement with the creation of the new building, everyone agreed it wouldn’t make sense to transfer his name to the new building and to instead name the new building, “Schaumburg Village Hall”. The campus grounds could still be named after him and potentially a street.

New Daycare: To be built on 1996 N Roselle Rd next to Lurie Children’s Hospital and Holiday Inn Hotel, an entirely new building would be created on this vacant space for the N Family School. The property was originally anticipated to be developed as a restaurant with surrounding hotel developments, but the plan never moved forward. The lot has been vacant since its creation pre-1980’s.

Engineering and Public Works: here is a list of some major projects coming this year:

CMP Storm Sewer Replacement/Rehabilitation – 1230 Summit Drive
CMP Storm Sewer Replacement/Rehabilitation – 416 Tebay Place
CMP Storm Sewer Replacement/Rehabilitation – 617 Boxwood Drive
CMP Storm Sewer Replacement/Rehabilitation – 931 Royal Court
CMP Storm Sewer Replacement/Rehabilitation – Crandon Lane
Meacham and Golf Bike Path
Plum Grove Road Pedestrian Crossing – Sherwood Lane (Entrance to Spring Valley Nature Center)
Traffic Signal Cabinet and Controller Replacement Program
Metra Parking Lot East – Lighting Improvements
Walnut Lane Resurfacing – Bode Road to Schaumburg Road
Sewer Analysis – Vital Streets
Priority Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation – Cedarcrest
Priority Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation – North Braintree
Priority Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation – Walnut & Kessel
Priority Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation – Bode Lift Station Basin
Priority Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation – Walnut Lane Sub Basin
Woodfield Road Resurfacing – Plum Grove Road to Meacham Road

Coffee with the Council:
• Regarding streets, one resident expressed concerns about certain streets become more narrow as it will increase conflicts between pedestrians and e-bike riders. The same resident expressed concerns about roundabouts being installed in residential neighborhoods. According to them, the City of Elgin removed two as it didn’t resolve existing traffic concerns. Trustees said they were aware of that but would make a decision based on what is best for the community, not by what another town has done. One resident outright requested the removal of the roundabouts, stating they’re dangerous. Trustees responded saying they are safer because they require motorists to focus on one direction instead of four.

• A resident asked if audible pedestrian crossing signals could be implemented on Schaumburg Rd. Trustees responded saying Cook County owns the road and therefore is the one to make that call, but hopes they will adopt that technology in the future. The Deputy Village Manager noted some will be installed at National and Higgins Roads.

• A resident thanked trustees for the road improvement project performed on Springinsguth Rd as their property did not experience flooding for the first time in 39yrs.

Adopt-A-Bikeway: Though the program decreased during the winter months, a total of 17 cleanups were undertaken within the last six months.

Volkening Lake bike path: due for construction and completion this summer

New Fees for Excessive Calls to Fire Department: due to a number of individuals requesting assistance that is non-medical in nature (invalid assists, lift assists, nuisance calls) a new fee structure will be established for repeated non-transport ambulance responses where no medical treatment or transport occurs. The goal will be to connect frequent callers with the correct support resources and offloading the burden from the Fire Department.
Note: this will not apply to “treat-no transport” situations where paramedics assess/medically treat a patient for a legitimate medical condition, and the patient then declines further care or ambulance transport
The fee is as follows over a rolling 12-month period:
Responses 1-10: No charge
Response 11: $100
Response 12: $250
Response 13 and each subsequent response: $325

Police/Fire Recruitment Update: following a new hiring process started in May 2025, Police now have zero vacancies (down from 13) and Fire has zero (down from 3). This is the first time in eight years the Police Department has been fully staffed

Goodbye Chickens, It Was Fun While It Lasted: following two requests by residents to raise chickens (one was permitted, the second was not), the Mayor requested an update on Village code. As of May, the raising of chickens are no longer permitted on any residential properties.

Local Scoop - April

Hey Schaumburgers --- Here is a local scoop on our village. If you're new and curious to know what this is, dig back through this subreddit until you find my post from May 2025.

Short version: these are bite-sized updates on things generally not reported by the local paper, Facebook groups, and other sources of news.

If there are specific topics you want to hear about or you have feedback, feel free to send me a message or leave a comment.

At the bottom are some links if you are interested in knowing more about what the Village is up to.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Transportation:

  • A study was done on the 90 North area to proactively deal with the increase of traffic due to the new neighborhood being developed by increasing transportation options so that personal vehicles aren’t required to get around (ex: bikes, scooters, e-bikes, e-scooters, on-demand shuttles, etc)
  • DART:
    • Recent info from the previous year shows DART buses arrived 98.2% of the time. (On-time is defined as the bus arriving anywhere 15min pickup time. Example: Bus said it will arrive at 12:30PM. If it arrives by 12:45, it’s considered on-time.)
    • Committed to keeping travel time to less than 45min, DART succeeded this standard at a rate of 97.06%.
    • The average survey rating completed by riders showed a 4.6/5.0 satisfaction rate.
  • Meacham Road Traffic Improvement: Beginning in 2026, the Village will implement a traffic-management system known as “lead-lag” on Meacham Rodd, which has a left-turn green arrow turn before/after the regular green light to reduce traffic congestion. This method was used on North Avenue (which sees ~40,600 vehicles/day) and speeds improved 12-18%. Also tested on Gold Rd (sees 28k-32k vehicles/day), it saw a speed increase by 12% eastbound and 3% westbound. Meacham Rd sees mostly 30k-36k vehicles per day, but can see +70k vehicles at the Higgins/Meach intersection. The desire is to see improved traffic flow and less congestion using this method.

Public Safety

  • Social Services as First Responders: since 2024/25, all five social service employees responded to calls where they were needed. After police assess the scene following a mental health call, they radio in a social service responder who arrive immediately. The social service employee helps defuse the situation, get the family some services (follow-up calls, counseling, etc.) to help resolve the situation. According to the deputy chief, this has been a major help with domestic and mental health related calls. The department has seen well over 600 responses where social services arrived to provide assistance.
  • Police Department Annual Report:
    • Group A offenses: these declined significantly in 2025 (3,112) from 2024 (4,029). Group A crimes include the most serious and frequently reported crime categories. These offenses encompass:
      • crimes against persons (such as assault, homicide, and sex offenses),
      • crimes against property (including burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft, and fraud)
      • crimes against society (such as drug and weapon law violations)
    • Traffic Enforcement:
      • 21,528 traffic stops were conducted compared to 24,862 in 2024.
      • Traffic crashes were the highest within the last five years: in 2021, there were a reported 2,878 crashes. In 2025, there were 3,337.
      • following installation of three speed detection cameras in residential neighborhoods and near schools (areas most impacted by speeding concerns) where automated warning citation would be given to speeders, this resulted in 25% reduction in speeding
    • Beat Cop: Officers now select their assigned shift and beat for the entire calendar year, promoting familiarity with neighborhoods, increased accountability, and stronger connections with residents and businesses.
    • Call volume: Through year-end 2025, the Police Department responded to 54,096 total calls for service, reflecting a decrease from 59,698 calls in 2024.
      • Traffic crashes represented by far the highest call volume in 2025.
      • The rest, in order of call volume were, public service, alarm, well-being check, ambulance assist, parking complaint, domestic, animal complaint, lock out, and theft.
      • Theft represented around 750 calls.
    • New Hiring: 17 new police officers were hired

Environment:

  • Water quality: construction sites will have its water inspected prior to construction beginning to ensure controls are in place throughout the duration of the construction project. This is to meet water quality goals established by the Village.
  • Environmental Fair: this year’s theme will be on “Rooting for Native Plants”. The goal will be to promote usage of native plants for those desiring to utilize them to fend off pests, educating residents and children on their benefits, Village regulations, and for those wishing to incorporate them into their yards

Village Board Meeting: Discussions were made by the mayor and trustees regarding what the name of the new Village Hall should be. The old building was designed by former Mayor Bob Atcher and was occupied by him for two years. He later moved in 1989 with his family to Kentucky before passing away in 1993.
