Laissez-Faire Capitalism DOES NOT WORK

In 2022, the UK government under Liz Truss introduced a huge program of tax cuts, particularly for businesses and higher earners, alongside plans for deregulation and supply-side reform. The idea was that lower taxes and less government intervention would stimulate economic growth.

Instead, it caused turmoil in financial markets. The pound plunged against the dollar, collapsing to an all-time low against the US dollar (nearly hitting parity at $1.03). The cost of living soured, and mortgage rates rose. Banks were eventually forced to intervene in the gilt market to halt a catastrophic “doom loop” and prevent further financial instability. To prevent the systematic collapse of the UK economy, banks were forced to launch a £65 billion emergency bond-buying program to artificially stabilize the market.

The long term impact was also that when mortgages returned, interest rates were drastically higher. Millions of UK homeowners faced surging monthly repayments, with average annual mortgage costs projected to spike by up to £5,100 per family.

The government then rapidly reversed nearly all of the tax cuts and deregulations. Truss’s Chancellor was fired, her economic free market program was abandoned, and after just 49 days, Truss resigned as Prime Minister, becoming the shortest serving PM in British history.

So maybe laissez-faire capitalism doesn’t work after all. Cut taxes, reduce government intervention, and you get a collapsing currency, soaring borrowing costs and market prices, financial instability and, eventually, the government having to intervene to save the financial system.

Maybe markets aren’t capable of “regulating themselves“ after all.

CMV: Communism isn’t as bad as Ayn Rand made it out to be

Ayn Rand argued that communism causes extreme poverty and prevents people from creating wealth altogether. In the USSR private business was banned, replaced by worker collectives, and there obviously were serious shortages and inefficiencies. Rand referred to the Soviet Union as a communist regime.

But take an ordinary Soviet worker in say 1975–1984 Russia. He isn’t starving, homeless, living in a slum or unable to afford basic necessities. He has a job, a state-provided apartment, regular food, heating, electricity, running water, healthcare, schools for his children, access to university, public transport, a television, a refrigerator, clothing, holidays and even some disposable income for ordinary leisure.

To be clear the quality of these things, and the living standards were a lot WORSE than capitalist countries. Someone who grew up in Ukraine under communism put it to me like this, you could have a stable life and money, but there wasn’t much interesting stuff to actually spend it on. While capitalism gives you far more innovation, variety and choice in what you can buy.

But his experience there didn’t remotely resemble the worst kind of living conditions or anything approaching extreme poverty like it is defined by the UN. There IS lots of wealth creation going on and the average worker is not barely surviving and “unable to be happy”. The country even achieved to be the world’s second largest economy. From wikipedia:

>The Soviet Union was one of the world's two superpowers, with hegemony in Eastern Europe, global diplomacy, ideological influence (particularly in the Global South), military might, economic strength, and  scientific and technological accomplishments. Its space program made significant achievements in the Space Race. It had the world's second-largest economy and the largest standing military. As a nuclear state, it wielded the largest arsenal of nuclear weapons in the world.

So if you went to an average Soviet worker and told him about how terrible Communism was, that it impoverishes you and makes it impossible to produce wealth and live anything but a miserable life, what exactly would you say to convince him?

He could respond “I’m not miserable or impoverished. I have a home, a job, food, education, healthcare, stability, and a comfortable life and can take care of my family. What exactly are you talking about?”

Can you be an Objectivist if you support Donald Trump?

I’ve heard conflicting things on this. ARI’s Yaron Brook has said:

>Those of you who are apologists for Donald Trump, please never use the word “Objectivism” to associate it with yourself. Because you cannot be Objectivists—you are not Objectivists… You’re the fifth-column within Objectivism. You all will destroy Objectivism. And it will ultimately be on you if America declines, if America disappears, if America succumbs to either the whackos of the left or the whackos of the right.

But Leonard Peikoff responded:

>The one [issue] that galls me the most is his [Yaron’s] statement on the radio that anyone who sympathizes or votes for Trump is not an Objectivist. So, he is implicitly declaring that my life work is not by an Objectivist, but his is.

>I am voting for Trump. That’s it… I heard somebody say: ‘No Objectivist would vote for Trump,’ and I’m still steaming over that. So I’m trying to publicize the fact that whoever said that is crazy.

>"I cannot and do not listen to Yaron's scoffing and strident blaming. This is not what Objectivism looks like in practice."

Objectivists, Why Do You Reject Anarcho-Capitalism?

Why do you trust the central planning of a government monopoly to protect your rights? Imagine how much more effective law and order would be if those in charge were Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Google etc. In the same way you subscribe to Amazon Prime and get an excellent service, you could subscribe to Google Police or Microsoft Police, press a panic button and a drone could be by your house in five seconds. There'd be competition and defence would be far more efficient if it was provided on the free market than being nationalised by the state.

Professor Dave is a Dishonest Person

Professor Dave’s recent hit piece video on the Israel / Palestine conflict was mostly factually incorrect and is more propaganda than scholarship.

The number of deaths in Gaza was said to be in the 200k range, which is 4x the accepted number. He promoted Oct. 7 rape denial. There is plenty of evidence that Hamas committed rape as an instrument of war. Even the UN acknowledges this.

He says that Israel knew about Oct. 7 before it happened, which is a conspiracy theory (in the style of Candace Owens). A "pre-planned campaign of ethnic cleansing and land theft" is one of many dubious or flat out false statements. "More than 80% of Israelis support the complete annihilation of the Palestinian people" is another false claim. He talks about mass graves as if Israel killed Palestinians and dumped them in graves. There is no evidence for this.

He calls Israel a psychopathic society that likes murdering innocent people, which is clearly racist/xenophobic. Since Israel is a liberal democracy with a pride parade, and the freest country in the surrounding area, this claim is clearly ludicrous. The idea that there was little evidence for Hamas using hospitals for their military operations was also fully factually incorrect.

The only part of the video that wasn't factually dubious or incorrect was him showing the massive level of destruction that Israel has inflicted onto Gaza. However, he then leaves out the context that Israel was responding in emergency self-defence, therefore Israel isn’t fully responsible for casualties that are the fault of Hamas for initiating force. That he also leaves out any discussion of Hamas and Hamas' goals from his video demonstrates his ideological commitment, not a commitment to the truth.

He also has stated that Mossad was involved in 9/11 which lands him squarely in the territory of degenerate anti-Jewish conspiracy theories.
