Advice needed

My partner has a young child with his ex. She sometimes needs to go to hospital due to her disability. These are not planned. My partner pays child support and they have an informal yet consistent custody schedule.
When she has to go to hospital, she expects my partner to look after their son. The issue is, when my partner doesn’t work, he doesn’t get paid (no parental leave). Surely if this is happening during her custody time, then it’s for her family to sort out? She has a huge family who do not work.
My partner would take his daughter if he could get parental leave but he can’t afford to miss work (and pay her child support). When he is ill during his custody time, he arranges child care with his family.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? I am just looking to see what other people do.
