Why Do the Graphics Become Blurry When Text is on Screen for Dragon Warrior 7 and Dragon Quest 4?

Why Do the Graphics Become Blurry When Text is on Screen for Dragon Warrior 7 and Dragon Quest 4?

Hey everyone! Hopefully someone might have an answer for me, been scouring the net for answers all day.

There has been a recent translation for Dragon Quest 4 on the PS1 and I was excited to give it a go. However, when I booted the game up and started the main adventure, the text comes through crisp and clear, but the game world and the characters become really fuzzy and blurry. I thought that was weird and booted up Dragon Warrior 7 to see if the problem was the same since they both run on the same engine. Sure enough, the same problem occurred.

I ran though a few games that I could think of that had 3D worlds and 2D characters, or any other game I could think that it could be a problem. I tried Breath of Fire 3 and 4, Front Mission 2 and 3, Alundra, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Grandia, and Kowloon's Gate. No problem whatsoever.

Attached below are screenshots of what I'm talking about and the settings used on the graphics tab. I'm using the global settings for all games. Here are the specs on my PC that I'm using to run Duckstation:

Windows 11 Pro Ver. 25H2

Nvidia RTX 4060 8GB

32 GB GDDR5 RAM @ 4800 MT/s

12th Gen Intel Core i7 12700k @ 3.6 GHz

Duckstation is being run on an internal SSD. The BIOS used is scph5501. Thank you all in advance the the help.

EDIT: Duckstation is at version 0.1-12074.

Starting My Dragon Quest VII Journey

Hey all, long time lurker, first time poster. Just wanted to share something with you all. Apologies for the long post, in advance, it's a bit of a ramble.

I've been a long time fan of Dragon Quest, ever since I played Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen on the DS when it came out. I've been in a slump lately and I thought to myself, "You know, there are a few mainline Dragon Quest games I have to beat."

With the release of Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined, I wanted to finally give the game a fair shake and play it. Looking over the discourse of the game, I have to admit that I was hesitant about which version to go for. It seemed to me that all versions have their strengths and weaknesses, giving me pause for some reason.

I tried to go for the 3DS version again, since I stopped after getting to Alltrades Abbey. I don't remember why I dropped it back then, but I gave it another shot but stopped again. I felt like I was missing something and I couldn't figure out what.

I don't have the money right now to give Reimagined a try, but with all of the changes they made for the game that I read about online, I had decided to pass on it for the time being.

Finally, I bit the bullet and started up the original PS1 version. i was hesitant to play this one for a few reasons:

  1. I've read that the translation was terrible and completely unfaithful to the original Japanese.

  2. The shards needed for progression are hard to find without a guide.

  3. It's glacially slow, compared to even the 3DS version.

However, after starting the PS1 version, all of those worries faded away. I compared the translation of the opening hour of play between it and the 3DS version and found that the translation, while having some errors being a PS1 era game with tons of text, was close enough that I was willing to look past it. The story still made sense and shone through for me.

As for the shards and pacing, that's the beauty of the internet. There are guides now that can seriously help if I miss something, both text and video. So, it's not too much of a concern.

After about 9 hours, I've just freed the second island and am about to go explore it again. I'm loving this version, guys. I'm actually excited to play this game and just take my time with it and love it for what it is. Plus, the engine for this game being the basis for the original remake of IV on PS1 and the releases of IV, V, and VI on DS really has spoken to something inside my aging brain. This version rocks for me. If anyone was truly upset about Reimagined, give this version a shot.

I'm not sure exactly where I'm going with all of this. I guess my point is; don't let indecision keep you from playing a wonderful game. Each version has their flaws, and there isn't really a definitive version of the game. However, pick the one that speaks to you the most and go for it. You won't regret experiencing a phenomenal game, but you will regret missing out on it if you don't make a decision.

I might give a review of sorts after my play through, I don't know. Thank you for bearing with me. Let me know what you think about Dragon Quest VII and if you had the same issue I had of indecision about which version to play.

TL;DR: I was undecided about which version of Dragon Quest VII to play, just jumped in to a version, and began to love what I was playing. Don't let FOMO keep you from making a choice. Let me know your thought.
