Looking for bleak horror LitRPG

I've recently replayed Fear and Hunger. One of those relatively popular, but largely obscure horror RPGs where you bumble around, nothing is explained to you, and you die over and over again.

All characters are various shapes and shades of horrible people. Running from enemies or dismembering them are often your best bet. Resources are scarce.

Something that is about slow exploration, bleakness and dread — no power fantasy at all. Preferably there is no main character that makes it from start to finish.

Has someone written something like that?

Have you ever accidentally started with a second book of a series? How did it go?

During the current Audible 2 for 1 sale I picked up Primal Wizardry book 1 and 2. I downloaded them both before going on a 3 hour jog. I accidentally clicked on Illusory Gains — book 2, after putting in my earbuds.

I was a little surprised by the established dynamics, but really enjoyed contextualising the group and their abilities. It felt smooth and interesting and hooked me so much that I got some groceries to have an excuse for spending more time with the book. I love worlds that feel lived in and alive — that feel like they continue without the narrative present.

I had no issues with the progression, it felt well integrated and narrative-driving.

When I returned home, I stopped at chapter 20 and noticed my little accident. I pondered for a bit whether I should just keep going with book 2 due to having a great time already, but went back to book 1. Book 1 has much slower pacing and is more conventionally exploring dynamics. I like it too, though not quite as much as book 2.

Has anything like that happened to you? How did it go?
