The Incredible Stilt Fishermen of Sri Lanka

One of the most fascinating traditions you can see along Sri Lanka’s southern coast is stilt fishing.

Instead of standing on a boat, fishermen perch on a small wooden crossbar attached to a pole driven into the shallow seabed, sitting several feet above the water while fishing with a simple rod and line.

📍 You’ll traditionally find stilt fishing around places like Weligama, Koggala, Ahangama and Kathaluwa.

What amazes me most is the balance involved. The crossbar is surprisingly narrow, and the fisherman has to stay steady while waves are constantly moving beneath him. It looks effortless in photographs, but it takes real skill and practice.

📸 And speaking of photographs, the dramatic images of fishermen silhouetted against the ocean especially at sunrise and sunset have helped make stilt fishing one of Sri Lanka’s most recognizable cultural symbols.

Have you ever seen Sri Lankan stilt fishermen in person? 🎣

Sri Lanka but in Purple <3

Didn't realize Sri Lanka had a jacaranda season until I saw photos from around Nuwara Eliya, the hill country — purple-blossomed trees against tea estates and misty hills.

Anyone know the actual timing for peak bloom, or specific roads/towns worth driving through to catch it?

Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya

Peradeniya and Hakgala don't get nearly as much attention as the beaches or temples, but the palm avenues at Peradeniya and the cooler mountain climate at Hakgala are a nice change of pace.

Anyone visited either one? Which would you pick if you only had time for one?

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Went back and forth on whether to visit Pinnawala given the mixed reputation elephant tourism has. Ended up going and it was worth seeing, though I know opinions are split on the ethics of it.

Anyone have thoughts, or know of more ethics-focused alternatives (sanctuaries vs. orphanages) worth looking into?

Few places in Sri Lanka blend history, culture, and coastal beauty quite like Galle Fort.
