Solution for audio crackling

Hey everyone! I use OpenShot to edit ASMR videos that I make and upload to YouTube. I record the video on either my phone or my camera, and i record audio separately with a Tascam dr05x.

I use OpenShot to overlay the recorded audio over the separately recorded video. I was frequently getting that crackling static over certain parts of my audio while editing. I already tried a ton of other advice i found on this subreddit, but none of it worked quite right. So, I thought I'd provide my solution for anybody else having this problem when overlaying audio to a video.

Once I get the audio track lined up with the video track, I would normally set the video's volume to 0 so you can only hear my audio track. This seems to be there the problem was. Once I actually disabled the audio on the video track (something I just now learned I could do), instead of setting it to 0, it fixed my crackling problems.

How to disable video audio

  1. Right click your video track
  2. Click "Properties"
  3. Find "Enable Audio" and set it to "Off"

I'm assuming this is because of clashing bitrates or something between my video and audio track, but if you're in a similar situation to me, it's a lot easier to just disable your video audio rather than separate it and adjust the bitrate.

TLDR: Audio crackling when overlaying audio to a video. Already tried fixing it through adjusting bitrates and sample rate. Instead of setting video volume to 0, fully disable the video audio instead.
