Transitioning away from triple feeding
My 3.5 week old baby was primarily formula fed for the first week and a half of her life due to a NICU stay, jaundice, and an 11% weight loss, combined with my re-admittance to the hospital for preeclampsia. Baby has been gaining well and we have been working with a lactation consultant to up my supply to meet her demand and have been triple feeding. Baby is very happy on the breast and is definitely transferring milk but is a slow eater. My concern, however, is that as we transition away from triple feeding, she wants to be on the boob almost constantly (which I thought was developmentally normal cluster feeding). However, last night, we decided that my husband should give her a bottle of formula just to see if she would still take it and she downed nearly 5 ounces, which makes me think that my supply is still not meeting her demand. I’m very disheartened by this as I hoped to be EBF and she seemed happy all day while EBF, but my number one priority is making sure that baby is not hungry. Does this mean that my supply is not enough for her? And does anyone have advice for multiple weeks of triple feeding (it feels very hard)?
