AGR Promotion... but with a twist

Fellow guardsmen,

I'll try and be brief, but looking for some feedback. Currently a TSgt with 17 year sat service and 10.5 years TAFMS. I've been a DSG after coming off Active Duty for most of my Guard career, but an AGR MSgt position opened up, and I got the position. It was communicated from my unit that it would also come with the MSgt promotion.

My leadership said they submitted the package and was up at the state level, but was just told that the package was at the Group Chief's desk, which he had some concerns. This is a new Group Chief, which I have not met.

With the timing of my AGR orders, my ACB and SSRB board would happen at the same time, and the Group Chief stated that he feels that I should wait 2 years before promoting so I would have a better chance of not being "not retained" from the ACB board. He also is concerned that I would be holding somebody else up that has a closer gap with sat service years and TAFMS (which there isn't anybody currently eligible and an E7 slot will be opening up at the end of this year).

My unit Chief and Superintendent came to me with this and asked if I would want to wait or if I would want to proceed with the promotion. With this, they stated that I will need to be all in, get all my PMEs done immediately, go on all available TDYs, and go above and beyond for everything basically. I was a bit concerned that there was even a question in me promoting immediately.

Does this sound like something is off? I've been doing the flight chief role for 3 months now, and have received nothing but praise from my leadership. Something just doesn't seem right with it.

Thanks in advance.
