Hi everyone!

Moving to Sydney from Spain with an Aussie passport – Starting fresh in my mid-20s, law background to TAFE nursing. Need advice!

Hi everyone!

I’m a 25-year-old law graduate living in Spain. My mum is Australian, so I hold an Aussie passport, but I’ve lived in Spain my whole life. Due to how tough the job market is here, I’ve decided to make a big leap: I’m moving to Sydney later this year to basically start over, study, and build a stable career and life.

My initial plan is to enroll in TAFE NSW to study the Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) and work towards becoming an Enrolled Nurse.

When I first land, I’ll be staying with a family member to get my feet on the ground, but since I didn't grow up in Australia, I am starting completely from scratch socially and professionally.

I would really appreciate some advice from locals, expats, or anyone in healthcare:

  1. Job Market & Experience: How easy is it to get a entry-level job in Sydney right now? Do employers always demand local Australian experience, or is it easier to get your foot in the door compared to Europe? What entry-level jobs would you recommend while I settle in/study (admin, reception, retail, hospitality)?
  2. Making Friends & Socializing: What are the best ways for someone in their mid-20s to build a genuine social circle in Sydney from scratch? Is it mostly through TAFE, work, local interest groups, or sports?
  3. TAFE & Nursing Reality Check: For anyone who has done the Diploma of Nursing at TAFE NSW, how did you find the experience, clinical placements, and job prospects after graduating?
  4. General Transition Tips: Coming from Spain to Australia, what are the biggest cultural or lifestyle adjustments I should expect in daily life?

I'm super excited about this new chapter, but also naturally nervous about stepping into the unknown! Any tips, reality checks, or encouragement would mean the world.

Thanks so much in advance!

Becoming an enrolled nurse

Hi everyone!

I'm planning to move to Australia in October and I'm seriously considering doing the Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled Nursing) through TAFE NSW.

I've never worked in healthcare before, and I don't have any nurses in my family or among my friends, so I honestly have very little idea what nursing is actually like beyond what I've read online.

Before I enrol, I'd really like to speak to people who have done the Diploma of Nursing in NSW, either recently or currently.

I'd especially love to hear about:

  • What was the course actually like day-to-day?
  • How difficult was the theory and the exams?
  • How much studying did you have to do outside of TAFE?
  • What were the practical classes like?
  • What was clinical placement REALLY like?
  • What kind of shifts/hours did you have during placement?
  • How much notice did you get about your placement?
  • How physically demanding was it?
  • What did you find emotionally difficult?
  • What was the biggest surprise about the course?
  • Was there anything you wish you'd known before enrolling?
  • What happens if you struggle with an assessment or practical skill?
  • How supportive were the teachers?
  • What is working as an Enrolled Nurse actually like after graduating?
  • And, knowing what you know now, would you still choose to do the Diploma?

I'm particularly interested in hearing the honest reality, including the difficult or unpleasant parts. I want to know what I'm getting myself into before making such a big commitment.

I also have Asperger's, so I'm someone who really benefits from knowing what to expect and having things explained clearly. I'm therefore especially interested in hearing about how organised/predictable the course and clinical placements are, and what kind of support is available to students who need adjustments.

If you've done this course (especially through TAFE NSW), I'd really appreciate hearing about your experience. Thank you!
