Parent trying to being seeds back from Europe.

Hi all!

I have a parent visiting me in Europe, she has a big garden by a national park in NSW that is technically separate from the bush but still very close (no fencing no real separation maybe 100m).

I keep finding seeds she finds interesting in her luggage that she is trying to sneak past me and bring back to plant there.

I have a degree in biology and know how risky for our ecosystems this can be but she doesn't listen to me. She has done this on several other trips and idk how many she has successfully gotten past me since I live in Europe.

I've just looked in her luggage and she has about 8 packets from a random garden center in Germany. I didn't want to pull out all her belongings but I fear she has other loose seeds hidden in there.

I've tried reasoning with her but she doesn't listen to me and just tries to hide them to take back. She's about to go to the UK next without me before she leaves back to Aus and idk how to stop her doing this.

I have looked it up and if she declares them she might be able to keep some since they're in packaging but I know her and know she won't declare them.

What do I do, any advice here?

Why there are so many sikhs in Australia?

Hi All

I am not asking why so many Indians, it is obvious, but why so many sikhs as their population is barely 30 million as I understand?

We live relatively in isolated place (old white town) and sikhs are I'd say 10%...

Study abroad in Australia?

Hey everyone,

I am currently studying Managerial Economics at Copenhagen Business School for my Bachelor's degree. By the summer of 2027, I'll be finished, and I have a huge dream of moving to Australia right afterwards to pursue a Master's degree in either Finance, Applied Finance, or something similar.

I know it is a broad question, but I am trying to figure out which city (Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, or the Gold Coast) and which specific universities would suit me best.

My absolute priority is the ultimate on-campus lifestyle. I want to live on-campus for that tight-knit college vibe, where it's super easy to meet people, build a network, and experience a wild social scene. A massive sports culture with elite facilities and club rivalries is a huge plus. While campus life and social events come first, the university still needs a well-respected business school with a solid finance program.

Which universities should I look into that offer this exact mix?

Thanks in advance:)

What British sweets do I send to Aussie kids?

I hope this is the right place to ask. For people with a working knowledge of the UK- I’m sending a parcel of family photos etc from the UK to a distant relative in Oz. They have grandkids aged 7, 8 and 11 and I want to tuck a few British sweets into the package as a surprise for them. What sweets that they can’t get in Australia could I include?

What comedy/horror media have we missed?

I am blown away by your entertainment media. My husband and I, both.

Deadloch, omg. TOO funny. “She swam them all out to sea”. I’ll never forget that last little joke. I know Conchords is NZ. Still. Dead. There was that one show with the guy that played several roles of a HS student. But one was a native that kept tormenting his teacher, principal and dad. He would write his dictation as simply “🍆-tation” on the white board.

Obviously, Muriel’s Wedding. Watched that, again, last night, after getting home from watching Leviticus at the theater. Talk To Me. I have a model of the hand on my sitting room mantle. It was my favorite Xmas gift last year.

The Nightengale was a beautiful and heartbreaking watch. Lake Mongo; hilarious. Babbadook..obviously.

I couldn’t handle that Snowtown one, or whatever it was called with that serial killer. So nothing like that. Just like the Timesuck podcast of Albert Fish, I had to tap out after about 10 minutes.

I would literally watch Toni Collette try to lick her own asshole, set to a score of jaw harps and kazoos. Grateful for any recommendations.

Struggling with social stuff as an international student

Hey guys, thanks in advance for any advice!! (=^▽^=)

I’m an international student and I’ve been struggling with some social stuff. Since I’m introverted and have language barriers, I’ve only made one Australian friend. But I’ve tried reaching out to Aussies. And several things have been confusing me.

I met a guy online. They were super passionate and polite at first. Like, they told me not to worry about my imperfect and said they’ll talk to me later. But after like two days, they disappeared and stopped replying to my messages.

Also, my Aussie friend doesn’t reply instantly. Sometimes it takes two or more days to hear back.

So I was wondering is it actually common to reply slowly and occasionally ghost people, or is it just they don’t wanna talk to me? (´・_・`)

Would really appreciate any honest thoughts, thank you very much! (◍•ᴗ•◍)

What's something that's completely normal in Australia but would surprise someone visiting for the first time?

I'm curious about everyday things rather than famous tourist attractions.

It could be something about daily life, driving, shopping, wildlife, work culture, housing, or social etiquette.

What usually surprises first-time visitors the most?

Redo highschool/equivalent?

So i have just turned 20 this year and im not happy with the direction my life has taken. I didnt attend year 9 much and dropped out of year 10 to get a job and help pay bills. I want to get my highschool/HSE grad certificate because a different course i want to study needs me to give them said document. Im not really sure on how to go about doing this but I've heard it is possible for adults to get a equivalent of the HS graduation in some way or another. A point in the right direction would be extremely appreciated! (I live in south brisbane if this helps at all)

WWYD? Comfortable life in Korea vs. Australian Working Holiday before I turn 35

I’m looking for outside perspectives because I’ve been going back and forth on this for months.

I’m a 33-year-old British ESL teacher currently living and working in South Korea. I’ve been here for several years and have built a comfortable life. I have a decent job, good work-life balance, plenty of paid leave, private work pension contributions, private health insurance, easy travel around Asia, and I’ve managed to save a significant amount of money.

At the same time, there are aspects of my life that have become very repetitive. I’ve been doing the same job for several years, and while it’s comfortable and relatively low-stress, I sometimes feel like I’m on autopilot. The weeks and months can start to blur together. I don’t dislike my work, but I don’t feel particularly challenged by it anymore, and part of me wonders whether my desire to move is really a desire for growth and a change of environment rather than dissatisfaction with Korea itself.

The dilemma is that I have the opportunity to do a Working Holiday Visa in Australia before I age out of eligibility. My original plan was to leave Korea next year, travel for a while, and then move to Australia. However, every year I seem to find another reason to stay in Korea for “just one more year.”

The latest reason is that my employer may contribute towards a Master’s degree in TESOL, but in return I would likely need to commit to staying for another two years. The Master’s itself isn’t hugely expensive (around 6500 USD in total), so while the funding would be helpful, it isn’t something I couldn’t pay for myself.

I currently teach adult ESL students and would ideally like to continue doing that in Australia.

What keeps me stuck is that there are genuine pros and cons to both options.

If I stay in Korea, I know what life will look like. I’ll continue saving money, have a stable job, enjoy a good work-life balance, complete my Master’s, and keep travelling around Asia during holidays. Having the Master’s would then give me the option for uni gigs in the future. If I left my current job, it would be pretty difficult to find such good conditions with all the paid holiday and benefits I’m currently getting were I to go back to Korea.

One thing that makes this difficult is that I genuinely like my day-to-day life here. I enjoy the familiarity, safety, and routine I’ve built. I have my favourite cafés, hiking trails, neighbourhoods, and weekend activities. I enjoy having small adventures after work and at weekends without needing to plan anything major. There is something very comforting about knowing how life works here and feeling settled.

If I leave, I get the chance to experience something different while I’m still eligible for a Working Holiday Visa. Australia appeals to me because of the opportunity to live somewhere new, travel around the country, visit New Zealand, and have a completely different life experience.

The thing that worries me most isn’t leaving Korea itself. It’s whether the reality of Australia would match what I’m imagining. I’m not particularly interested in the stereotypical backpacker lifestyle of hostels, partying, and bouncing between short-term hospitality jobs. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, but at this stage of my life I’d ideally like to continue building my career in ESL rather than stepping away from it.

One of my biggest concerns is whether there are realistic opportunities for someone with several years of adult ESL experience to find English teaching work in Australia on a Working Holiday Visa, or whether I’d be much more likely to end up relying on hospitality or other casual work.

Financially, I’m in a reasonably strong position and wouldn’t be arriving with no savings. I have a substantial financial cushion and wouldn’t be relying on finding a job immediately to survive. If I went, I’d probably try to establish myself in Perth first, work for a period of time, and then explore more of the country.

The reason this keeps coming back into my head is that I can easily imagine staying in Korea for another two years and then wondering whether I missed my chance to try something different while I still could. At the same time, I can also imagine arriving in Australia and missing the stability, familiarity, routines, and quality of life I’ve built in Korea.

For people who have done working holidays, worked in ESL in Australia, or made a similar move in their 30s, what would you do in my situation?

EDIT: thank you all for your insights so far. I’ve already done one year working holiday in Australia (2017). So I would be entering on my second year. The plan was to base myself in Perth a few months, explore WA then go to the East Coast but realise job opportunities are more limited there for my industry.

Why is Ranger Danger a thing?

I know it's just a funny stereotype, but I truly think it has merit. From my experience on the road, to Dashcam Owners Australia having 10x the footage they need to make a whole episode dedicated to Ranger drivers; it all just adds up.

Any theories as to this phenomenon?

Why do they serve snacks and light meals in pokies rooms?

I’m in QLD, I just wondered if it’s a legal thing or an incentive to keep gamblers gambling/drinking or something else?
At a pub on the Gold Coast currently, they’re serving chicken caesar wraps and pizza. What’s the best pokies to room feed you’ve come across?

Who are the Aussies supporting in the Mexico vs England match tomorrow, and why is it Mexico?

It feels wrong to support England in sport, unless it’s against the Yanks.

What’re your thoughts?

Viva México cabrones!!!

Will losing weight affect a forearm armband tattoo?

Hey everyone,
I’m thinking about getting an armband tattoo on my forearm. I’m a bit overweight at the moment, so my forearms are fairly big. I already have a specific design in mind (not just a simple band or line).
My question is: if I lose a significant amount of weight later on, is the design likely to get distorted or spoiled, or do forearm tattoos generally hold up well after weight loss?
Also, I’ve been quoted around AUD 600 for the piece in Brisbane. Does that sound like a fair price for an armband-style tattoo with a custom design?
Would love to hear from anyone with personal experience. Thanks!
