Maybe a silly question, but how do you prewash your fabric? If you put your big piece of fabric in the wash won’t it fray on the edge it was cut? Do you put it in a garment bag? Finish the whole edge before washing? Just accept some fray?

I inherited a Singer 301A. I am a super beginner but really want to start making garments. I keep searching beginner patterns and they all call for zigzag stitch. I know there are things like French stream seams I can do instead but for my first garment ever I’d prefer a simple pattern already written way. Any beginner pattern recommendations for a first garment with no zigzag or overlocking?
