A newbies first few completed projects

I originally got a sewing machine to sew fabric linings for my leathercraft bag projects. And look at the tangent that this has turned into!

The shirt and sleep shirt were patterns from Simplicity. The roll lumbar pillow is inspired by a pillow from IKEA. The yoshi throw pillow covers is inspired by the same pillows inside the Odyssey from the Super Mario Odyssey game

I made a T-shirt!

I made this last night using one of my old T-shirts as a reference to trace the pattern.

It turned out really pretty when I tried it on.

The fabric is a stable jersey knit that I bought a long time ago. It’s basically T-shirt fabric, but with very little stretch.

I really like how it turned out.

Should I take it in at the waist or crop it + take in the crotch?

I think it's originally supposed to be high rise, but I have a short torso (I think) so I'm not sure if taking in the crotch + cropping would suit me better. Added a photo of the side so you can see how much it gapes currently. There is elastic at the back of the waist. I have some experience but not a crazy lot!

First Time Pattern Assistance Needed

Absolute stupid question,,,I am attempting to make my first sewing project using a pattern. I am making ”D” and I am confused if I need to sew the skirt completely closed before attaching the elastic waist band or do I attach when one side is still “open”? I am in total analysis paralysis over this. Thank You for any help.

(Asking for Advice) Help, Should I alter this dress?

Hi, there's an upcoming wedding in three days and I was thinking if I could alter my dress differently to fit the theme. I just realized my color and design is off by itself in comparison to the actual motif(floral, pink, peach). My auntie was the one who picked it for me and she's quite known for going abstract. To be fair, it would pair nicely with my other fam member's colors and design but not the actual theme of the wedding.

Top part - the posted motif and what my family is wearing Bottom part - the dress's sequin design and color, how it looks on me

If I were to alter it, how should I?

If you're looking for a sewing table visit your big box hardware store.

I'm in the process of doing a major reorganization of our basement and I needed more work surfaces. I first saw YouTube channel NeverTooMany using hardware store tables last year and decided to try killing two birds with one stone. A table that I can set up a machine on but also use for general home projects.

What I bought
I bought the 46" adjustable height table from Home Depot. Lowes has a similar but smaller 42" table that also comes in pink which looks really sharp. The HD Table also comes in multiple sizes up to 72 inches long. The cost was just under $300.

What I like.
I was able to assemble this solo but if you have a second set of hands it will go faster. The instructions were excellent and it came with both wheels and plain feet.
The work surface is large enough to put a 18x24 cutting mat with no issues, You can squeeze a 24x36 mat but it just fits.
The table is more than sturdy enough for any of my 3 machines. That includes my 1950's Pfaff 230.
The height range is huge and the crank mechanism is smooth.
26 in. to 39 in. H when using the included leveling feet
29 in. to a 42 in. H when using the included casters

What I don't like.
The drawers are shallow. You have just over 2 inches of clearance. The tin for my vintage Pfaff just clears the top after the liners are installed.
The hand crank is slow. It takes a while to get from the lowest to highest position. It's not difficult just tedious.
The table came without drawer liners. HD is pretty good about including liners on even their cheapest tool storage. I have no idea why they skipped it on this product.

I plan to use this for a variety of tasks over the next few weeks. I have to knitting machines I'm refurbishing and I have to do maintenance on my 3d printer. Feel free to ask any questions.

How do I fix this

This pattern was super weird and I’ve already tried adjusting it to make it fit better around the top but now it’s all gapey?

I just don’t even know what to adjust.

It’s 6 princess panels and I don’t care if I need to like… change the whole neckline I just don’t know where I should be changing. Or how to change it while still matching the pieces

First Completed project.

Stetch waist pleated mid skirt. Made this for a friend's birthday. It's the first "not pillowcase" project I've done. Took about 20hrs total. Much of which was figuring how women's clothes fit, as I've never worn any xD. Didnt use a pattern, just lots of math.

This was a heck of a jump up from pillowcases, but I'd say the irritation of undoing loooong seams kinda desensitized me to screwing up, so I feel pretty good with the end result.

I also realized from this, that the motivation of making something for another pushes me way more than making something for myself.

Anyways, just wanted to share cause I feel kinda proud of myself for trying a new hobby, and achieving something I set out to do.

Edit: Why the heck are people sharing this? XD I should have put a watermark.

Can I turn this zip up into a lace up back?

I bought this corset second hand and I’m in love with it but it’s in the slightest too big on my waist. I have basically no sewing experience and I was thinking I could maybe turn the back into a lace up corset? Any suggestions on how I can do this in a beginner friendly, cheap and sturdy way?

Janky Jean Shorts

My boyfriend's jeans ripped above the knee, so we cut both pant legs and I hemmed them to make shorts. This is the janky result.

I'm going to rip out the seams and try again. Any guidance on how to prevent the unwanted bell shape? I used a Schmetz jean needle and 100% polyester thread, because the color was the closest match to the original topstitching. The machine is a Singer Esteem II.

I don't want to take off any more length because these are already the minimum comfortable length for him.

How to stop crochet lace edges from fraying?

I’m having a hard time with finding a way to finish cut edges of crochet lace/lace in general. Ideally without using some sort of glue since i’d like it to be wash safe and it ends up looking messy most of the time. I’ve tried doing an overlock stitch/couching stitch on the edge of the lace but the machine feet end up eating the lace… any tips would be much appreciated.

Singer touch 2005 jamming issue

The thread would constantly go into the bobbin area and get stuck. I cleaned the area and tried adjusting the clearance but its not working. Clearance is fine but it would just go into that slip and not skip.
Any idea how to fix this?

i have like actually 0 clue where to start

i've recently been seeing a lot of videos of people sewing their own bags, clothes, etc and i really want to try doing that. luckily, i already have a sewing machine (taken from my mom since she doesn't use it very often). its the brother js1410. the thing is i've never in my life done anything related to sewing. the most i've done is help my mom get a thread in a needle. i dont know where to start. should i start with handsewing or go straight to using the machine. what do i start of making? also i'm not ready to invest in fabric and all that stuff yet. i do have a lot of old clothes that are too small or i dont wear that i'm willing to cut up and use. does anyone know of any yt series i could watch for help?

Suggestions for making pants with a *lightweight* fabric

Hi all! I’ve made these Lane Pants before in a more structured/heavier cotton (think fabric from Michaels) and really love them.

https://preview.redd.it/0888hl4dmgbh1.jpg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87740a873275550a8ab701d80d9c54fb2d7b49f0

I want to make them again but in a more lightweight, breathable fabric so I bought this crinkle gauze / bubble gauze. (Side note: this was the best option I could find in my budget, so if you have suggestions for affordable linens, I’ll gladly take them!)

https://preview.redd.it/0ulaso4gmgbh1.jpg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e893c3996eac9749f9858a2dc071a7cab16567ab

I’ve washed the fabric and it is nice but a bit translucent. It’s not completely sheer, but shapes are definitely visible through the fabric.

So what do I do?

I’m considering two options: 1) make the pants as usual and make sure to wear black bike shorts underneath it when I wear them or 2) double the fabric - as in cut two pieces for each pattern piece and layer it when sewing.

Thank you in advance!!

What do you think of this fabric?

If this fabric was made into a backpack or passport wallet or something, would you want it or is there orange too much? I can't tell if i like it or not.

Helping your future self to get up and sewing faster

If you're like me you have more time and energy on some days versus others. If you're like me in another way you may have more fabric specifically quilting cotton than a rational person may need.

For me i've found that boxed corner zipper pouches are a quick and easy win and they make cute gifts & gift bags. On my high energy days I've been cutting up fat quarters into a convenient zipper pouch size. Today I interfaced them.

Now I can grab 2 coordinating pieces from each bag and a zipper. Maybe I'll quilt the outer layer. Maybe'll use four different pieces of fabric. Maybe I'll play with color blocking. The point is that I'm starting several steps ahead and that means I have more energy to play around.

With Christmas being only 172 days from now it also give me ample time to stock pile just in case gifts for when your third cousin brings his new girlfriend who no one was expecting to the family dinner and you don't want them to feel left out.
