Upgrading to a medium weight machine

So, I'm getting really into home decor projects. Mainly throw pillows and curtains. While my Singer Simple machine can sew medium weight upholstery fabric just fine with good tension, I worry that doing it so often will beat the crap out of it. I have a mother that enjoys when her 10 throw pillows match her curtains which are seasonal, so I'll be making a decent amount of pillow covers.

Whenever I research a machine for upholstery, I tend to get sewists talking about industrial machines to reupholster couches and sew up sails and stuff. Which is very cool, but not what I'm looking for. I think I want a medium-duty machine. Something that can withstand those sort of projects over and over again. Right now I have my eye on the Janome HD-2200, which looks great for me and has pretty fab reviews, but was wondering if there any other suggestions. My max is around $500.

Thanks!

Should you believe a company when they say the fabric is pre-washed?

The first step when I buy fabric is the finish the raw edges and wash. But, some of the ankara fabric I have says its already pre-washed and guaranteed not to shrink after washing. How true to do you guys find that to be? I kinda feel like I should wash before starting a project anyways.

Open back top, upper back bodice buckling

hello! i finished a toile for the Cherie Top by Genuinely Em Sewing. The pattern gave instructions on how to fix gaping in the neckline which i managed to do for the first time ever! however, i noticed that the upper back bodice was buckling/gaping. the pattern didn't have any tips to fix that and didn't really mention it at all.

is this something that would naturally adjust itself when i make the real pattern and add a lining? or should i shorten the length between the upper back bodice shoulders?

So close!

I am 1 polish away from having used all 61 of my polishes at least ONCE. I did do some polish buying but also some destashing (AKA: i asked my little sister if she wanted the ones i didn't and she said yes) and replaced anything that had a crappy formula. since i started this spreadsheet in June 2025, the most I've repeated a polish was 6 times. And that polish was a plain black creme.

I'm not going to use this as an excuse to buy more, I'm really going to hunker down and get into nail art. dots and lines baby! or maybe just lots of skittle manis!

Finally reached beginner's sewing nirvana

I've been taking sewing seriously for about 2 years now? I took a class and then went out on my own but had a horrible time with each project. But for this ruffle skirt I had a sudden epiphany:

I could take my time.

No seriously, I would sit and sewing for hours on end, getting cranky and sore and yanking stuff around. This time, I took 6 or 7 days to complete this? I ironed everything. I did test stitches on some scrap before I went back to it and I just had a great time. I didn't even curse my sewing machine once! I called her a good girl even! Several times!

I picked this fabric on a whim so the finished product doesnt really appeal to me but I plan to make this skirt again in some plain linen or other summery fabric. I attached a previous attempt at this skirt (mangled with a serger i had no business using lol) from last year.

Why is the most common dress zipper placement on the back vs the side?

The side is where I'd prefer my dress zipper to be but I don't see it as often as I'd like. Before I bungle my way through patterns by moving things around, just curious if there was a technical reason why zippers are always in the back vs the side.

Black+Brown members–can I chat about your nipples?

Disclaimer: I'm a cis woman who recently (7-ish months ago) had a breast lift but this sub is quite a bit more diverse than the plastic surgery or reduction subs.

Essentially, one of my nipples+some of the anchor scar below it are very pink. Sorta looks like one of those speckled pink and brown piglets lol. If you had very pink scarring around your nipples after your surgery, did it ever return to it's original shade or at least darken a bit? If so, how long did it take?
