I happened to have 2 perfectly sized and shaped scraps of fabric for dog bandanas

I happened to have 2 perfectly sized and shaped scraps of fabric for dog bandanas

I immediately thought matching dog bandanas when I saw my fabric scraps. All I did was trim off a long piece of selvage from the little dog's scrap. I think I like these more than the shirt I made with this fabric that doesn't fit me quite right.

This was mostly a test to make sure they were the right size. I'll probably serge the edges so they don't fall apart and add a bit of Velcro for a safer closure.

I was feeling a bit down so I decided to make a few easy shirts

I've been making slightly harder projects lately, which I enjoy, but I was feeling really down after spending many hours on a frustrating project that just didn't fit right (I used cheap fabric but was hoping for something wearable).
Anyways, I decided to make a few easy shirts to make myself feel better.

  1. Matchy Matchy Trio top. I got this book from the library so the pattern was free! Very easy woven top since it doesn't have any darts and has dolman sleeves. Center is a rayon challis left over from another project and sides are some sort of polyester I got from a mystery fabric bundle.

  2. Sinclair Bondi tshirt with crew neck. Fabric is more vibrant in person, cotton spandex jersey from another mystery fabric bundle. I've made this pattern before and I have a serger so this only took a couple hours. I really like how the double needle detail turned out for the hems. This is the first time I've use it successfully! I probably should've gone up a size (or at least graded for my waist and hips) for this fabric but it fits well enough.

  3. A very lazy Seamwork Hansie using the last of a thrifted sheet. It was originally supposed to be a nightgown using the bonus pattern but it was too tight around the hips. So I chopped it off and made a shirt. I did a very dense serger stitch instead of proper hems. The neckline facing got caught under at one point and I didn't bother to fix it. It feels cool and is really comfy for wearing around the house, so I'm still considering it a win.

Finding patterns for knits with low 2 way stretch and no recovery? And cheap toile fabric for it?

It seems like most knit patterns I've found call for ~50%+ 4 way stretch and good recovery. I can't find any site that lets you filter by stretch requirements so it means searching through a lot of patterns. Google hasn't been any help. Any suggestions to narrow down my search or specific pattern recommendations would be appreciated.

I have some cupro jersey fabric (2 yards each of 4 colors) that I would like to use soon. It's flowy and light weight, seems like it would be perfect for summer. It only has around 25% stretch in 1 direction and no recovery. I'm really struggling to find many patterns that will work for it. I'd like to make a top, bottom and dress if possible.

I was planning to make the Seamwork Bobby dress but I made 3 toiles (1 full, 2 bodice only) and couldn't get the fit right. Now I'm out of cheap toile fabric with similar characteristics. Does anyone have recommendations for a cheap toile fabric for this?

I was given these Saris to use for sewing but they are a bit musty. How to wash them?

I was told the green one is silk, and I'm fairly sure that it is. I'm not sure about the pink one. It is some sort of sheer beaded fabric (maybe a chiffon but I'm not sure about the fiber content) with beaded borders. They have a slightly odor, nothing horrible.

I walked past a lady wrapping up a yard sale and saw she had some fabric in the free pile. When I asked if she had any other fabric left she insisted I take these to use for my sewing as well. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to bring myself to use them but I'd still like to get the odor out.

Latex free elastic for swimwear?

Does anyone know of a latex free equivalent to rubber swim elastic? I found one shop in the UK selling latex free rubber swim elastic but shipping to the US would be $50.

I'm learning to sew my own swimwear. I have a minor latex allergy (it gives me a rash) so I can't use rubber elastic that is apparently the best option. I have cotton swim elastic but I'm running into issues with it stretching out when I try to finish the leg holes. I have clear swim elastic too but it isn't meant to be stretched that much.

Using regular swim fabric as lining?

I have a bunch of swim fabric I got for cheap from mystery fabric bundles. I don't think any of it is lining fabric. I have some scraps I think are swim lining fabric but not nearly enough for an entire swimsuit.

Google said using actual lining fabric is important because it will dry faster but I change immediately after getting out of the pool. So in this situation can I use regular swim fabric as the lining?

Second toile (bodice only). Thoughts?

Pattern is Seamwork Bobby.

First toile: https://www.reddit.com/r/sewing/comments/1v256gb/toile_with_a_lot_of_fit_issues_what_do_i_need_to/

This time I went up a size to 14, shortened the entire bodice by 1.5" (0.5" shorter than before) and did a 0.5" swayback adjustment. I just made a quick, unlined bodice with unfinished armholes and neckline.

I'm fairly happy with the back and bust fit now. I'm sure it could be better but I'm happy with good enough. Should I shorten the bodice more to around where the red mark is on the front picture? That seems like a lot to me but I think that's my natural waist.

I know the front looks shorter in the center but that's just the fabric rolling up. This is a really light weight jersey that rolls like crazy.

Books on fitting? And any other helpful sewing books

I'm looking for recommendations on books that go over fitting. I checked one out from the library but it wasn't quite what I was hoping for.

Also any other sewing book recommendations are appreciated. I'm an advanced beginner, maybe intermediate.

Toile with a lot of fit issues. What do I need to change?

Pattern is Seamwork Bobby. Size 12. I am 5' so I shortened the bodice by 1" and skirt by 4". I planned to use 1.25" elastic instead of 2" so I adjusted the casing stitching accordingly but apparently did it wrong because my casing ended up way too small. I ended up using 1/2" elastic just so I could finish the toile. Fabric is an absolutely horrible tissue weight polyester jersey. I plan to make the final garment from cupro jersey.

I chose the size based on my bust measurement and didn't think I needed to grade up for my waist and hips based on the fit and stretch of the fabric. I'm guessing that is my biggest issue but I'm seeing so many fit issues I don't even know where to start. In addition to all the waist/hip fit issues, the neckline is gapping in the back. I'm also not sure how much of this is being caused by the horrible fabric clinging to me and the shorts I'm wearing under it.

Double needle issues

I'm attempting to learn to use a double needle for hemming knits but it seems like the stitching isn't quite right. I can feel the bobbin stitch pulling when I stretch the fabric. I thought it was fine but when I sewed the sleeve hem the bobbin thread snapped.

Machine is a brother CS7000x with brand new Schmetz stretch double needle. Machine is definitely threaded correctly and using the correct bobbin. Fabric is polyester ITY knit.

Completed, glued and mounted! The Six Portals, Ravensburger, 7000 pieces

Didn't take as much time as I thought it would. Maybe 3 weeks not counting an extended break at one point.

Interestingly each half of the puzzle were different shades of blue. It was really obvious when I had it upside down for gluing, I wish I took a picture.

Dog with abnormal gait. Should I ask for more testing?

~1.5 year old neutered male mixed breed, 12 lbs. He has both the dwarfism genes (CDDY linked to IVDD and CDPA) so he has a long back and short legs, although not as extreme as a dachshund.

Our trainer noticed he doesn't bend is back leg knees much when he walks. He keeps his legs straight and walks from the hip. She was also concerned some of his anxiety and fear aggression (such as occasionally snapping when he thinks we're going to pick him up, even though he typically likes to be held) could be caused by pain. I took him to the vet a few weeks back. She saw the abnormal gait but didn't seem overly concerned. I ended up feeling a bit silly bringing the whole thing up since there was no recent injury and no obvious pain or limp. She felt for luxating patella and said everything felt normal. She said he probably just has a weird gait or it's just due to him being anxious. She thought X-rays were unnecessary but said they could do them if we really wanted to.

He doesn't show any obvious signs of pain, loves running around, leaping on and off furniture (I know this isn't good but there's no stopping him) and standing on his hind legs. He does shake a lot (but he's an anxious dog) and occasionally stands with his back arched a bit.

Should we pursue X-rays? Money isn't a huge concern (we have insurance). I'm more concerned about putting him through a stressful situation for no reason. On the other hand I know early diagnosis can critical for IVDD and joint problems.

How many layers of mod podge? Puzzle damage when applying to the back?

I'm working on gluing The Six Portals 7000 piece puzzle. It is going to be mounted to a piece of hardwood with wood glue and hung on the wall.

I've applied 2 layers of matte mod podge to the front. I want it to be as solid as possible before I flip it but I'm worried a third layer will make it cloudy. Any thoughts?

It seems like most people recommend applying mod podge to both the front and back of a puzzle. However both times I've applied it to the back of a puzzle a bit got stuck to the front and caused damage even though I had wax paper under. Do you just not spread the mod podge all the way to the edges when applying to the back? I know some people tape the back but it seems like that wouldn't be as effective as mod podge.

This puzzle is beautiful. I'm so worried about damaging it!

The Six Portals, Ravensburger, 7000 pieces (First half)

Finally finished the first half of the Six Portals. I started it a couple months ago, mostly finished the green portal then took a break from puzzling for awhile so I could do some sewing. Decided to start working on it again last weekend and just finished it today! This puzzle is pretty easy for a large piece count due to each portal being so distinct.

Like all Ravensburger large puzzles this uses a repeat cut. I didn't have any false fits until the red /orange border which had 2 very similar pieces with identical shapes. As far as I could tell the cut is repeated twice, top and bottom. I assumed it would repeat 4 times, but I don't think it does.

Can't wait to get started on the second bag! I think I'm going to glue this puzzle once it's completed. I really like the artwork. I'm just not sure about the logistics of gluing such a large puzzle. I'm assuming it will need to be mounted to something for stability.

Purposefully silly home groom

Little Guy hates strangers and grooming, and is fear aggressive. I've been grooming him at home since we adopted him a year ago.

Anyways, I try to extend the amount of time between grooms as much as possible for his sake. He especially hates his legs brushed and shaved so I try to shave them down as much as possible. I didn't want to shave him completely naked though so I had fun giving him a ridiculous haircut with a mohawk. I did a 10 blade on the legs, face and sanitary, 1/4" on the sides of his body, and 3/4" for the Mohawk. Then I had to get opawz blow pens to make it even more silly.

I made a pleated skirt (toile)!

Pattern is Seamwork Kenzie. Size 18, shortened 6" because I'm really short. Fabric is a cheap polyester that I got for $2/yard from Fabric Mart. Last picture is the fabric I plan to make the final garment from.

I was really intimidated by this project since I haven't done pleats or a garment zipper before. The pleats were way easier than I expected. I think all the prep of marking them took longer than the actual pleating. I must've had a few of the pleats slightly off though, since the waistband was about 2" smaller than the skirt. I think I also had the waistband pieces swapped. Didn't bother to fix it since this was just a toile that I will never actually wear.

Closed toe wide shoes that will look nice with summer dress/skirt but comfortable for being on feet all day?

I've recently picked up sewing and I'm having a lot of fun making summery clothes like dresses and skirts. But I don't have any shoes to wear with them!

I work in a lab so I'm on my feet all day and have to wear closed toe shoes. My feet are flat and wide. I also tend to get extremely painful blisters from shoes rubbing on the back of my ankles, especially if I'm not wearing socks. I currently only own tennis shoes because it's so hard to find anything that fits.

Is there any way to alter this dress so it doesn't look horrible on me?

I made this dress from a lovely cotton lawn. I did a toile first and it turned out fine. But the final garment is horrible (it is complete except a final hem). The bodice is too wide across the shoulders and the armholes are too big. The skirt poofs out funny and makes me look heavier.

Right now I'm thinking of turning it into an elastic waist skirt and just scrapping the bodice.
