Beginner! Made a strawberry tote bag.

Received a sewing machine for my birthday and having so much fun trying new patterns and projects. I recently attended a quilt conference and picked out some cute fabrics from Japan. Used two to make this Tomorrow Tote, pattern from ZakkaSewn book.

I made a T-shirt!

I made this last night using one of my old T-shirts as a reference to trace the pattern.

It turned out really pretty when I tried it on.

The fabric is a stable jersey knit that I bought a long time ago. It’s basically T-shirt fabric, but with very little stretch.

I really like how it turned out.

I felted this wool blend, didn't I?

Photos:

  1. Screenshot from a video I took demonstrating its structure a bit; this was pre-wash
  2. The full meter post-wash
  3. Close up post-wash
  4. Thickness of fabric post-wash (notably thicker than before)

Please help because I'm really sad.

Recently got back from Japan and picked up this beautiful, lightweight, soft 71% wool, 29% nylon blend. I only got a meter of it because it was expensive.

Well, I forgot it was wool and stuck it in the wash with regular detergent at 40 degrees Celsius (spin drain only, no dryer) and it came out noticeably thicker, harder, and less stretchy. It's felted, aka ruined, right? Is there anything I can do to save it?

Edit: Thank you for the speedy replies everyone! Seems I have felted it, sigh. I'll take a look at some of the alternate ideas some of you proposed and hopefully get inspired :)

Need Sizing Help,PLEASE!

I am wanting to make McCalls M8285 view C. The longer white dress. I got this cool fabric from Mood and also the Polyester crepe de chine for the lining. Both were on sale for amazingly good prices. So I couldn’t resist. Not that I wanted to lol!

The problem is that I don’t know what size to use! I lost so much weight, that I have a completely different shape now. Kinda like a very short box with legs! I realize that I will need to do some grading but I don’t know how to do that yet.

My current measurements are
Bust: 36”
Waist: 34”
Hips: 38”
Height: 4’ 10”

See what I mean by being a box with legs? So if I look at the finished garment measurements, I would need a size ? for the bust, a size? for the waist it doesn’t matter. The smallest sizes are xs, and I’m obviously smaller than that.

For the top sizing section of the pattern envelope I would need to use a size Medium for the bust, a size Extra Large for the waist and a size Medium for the hip.

So what size would I cut out? And if there’s a lot of grading, how do I do it?

Please help! ✌️🦋
I am enclosing pictures. I really hope that they show up.

Flaming hot baby pants!

I made these for a friend’s baby. Heavily inspired by Mutsu’s Prospective Flow applique fire pants and jacket.

Pattern: big butt baby pants by made by Rae
Fabric: cotton and muslin scraps. The muslin is bonded with wonder under

I created an svg for the shape and had my cricut cut it out. Sewed to the pant legs with a blanket stitch.

The inside says “made in 2026 ♥️ 3m-6m

I didn’t know how to sew a button when I began making this gown.

This is a self-drafted, Rococo-inspired robe de cour created for the Fêtes Galantes at Versailles. While inspired by mid-18th century court dress, it is not intended to be a strict historical reproduction.

Pattern/Drafting:
Bodice/stays and grand pannier were drafted using references from Patterns of Fashion 5 by Janet Arnold (School of Historical Dress), then extensively modified to achieve my desired silhouette and design.
We wrapped my torso in Saran Wrap and masking tape and drew the bodice outline on me, cut it off, cut the pieces and accounted for a 5/8th’s seam allowance and 2 inch reduction.
Additional draping and fitting were done directly on the dress form.

Fabric:
Main gown: silk brocade (silk blend jacquard/brocade)
Foundation garments: cotton coutil
Boning: synthetic whalebone
Petticoats: cotton
Trim and embellishments applied by hand.

This was my first 18th-century gown, and with the help of my best friend, a seamstress, I learned a lot about historical sewing while making it.

How would you add 6 inches of length to this dress?

Bought this dress for a wedding but it’s about 6 inches shy of being floor length on me (and I’m really short!)

What would be a way to add length that doesn’t look tacked on or contrived?

Wish I had time to sew something from scratch!

Summer Maxi dress

Pattern is McCalls 7948 with the following alterations:-

  • Hacked the sleeve pattern (by slashing and spreading) to give an elbow length flutter type sleeve
  • Cut the front neckline a little deeper than given in the pattern, I've made this pattern up before and find that the neckline as given cuts very high on the throat, especially when sitting down
  • Altered the skirt to give a maxi length with a hem frill, in such a way as to use up all the fabric I had (not hard as the pieces are basically rectangles)

The fabric is a viscose from Little Johnny fabrics

Upgrading the Mini Trader Joe’s Tote Bags

My wife and daughters were gifted a few of these Mini Trader Joe’s tote bags, and I thought it would be a nice touch to add a lining. But instead of stopping there, I decided to make them a little more functional.

Each bag got a zippered top closure, an interior zippered pocket, and a slip pocket. A couple are lined with custom-printed ripstop, while the others use a generic 70D ripstop. I was surprised by how straightforward the project was, and it made these little totes much more practical for everyday use.

As a bonus, it gave me another excuse to sew on my recently restored Singer 201-2. I own several other vintage machines, but this one has quickly become my favorite. It’s smooth, quiet, and somehow always ends up being the machine I reach for first.

What do you all think?

Made this beautiful handbag over the weekend!

I really like the challenge of these bags. They’re complex. It’s like a puzzle and the finished product is just beautiful!

This beauty took me a weekend on and off with a sick toddler. My favorite part is either the bag birthing or the color and hardware matching.

Pattern is the Hiraeth from Lavender &twine
Patterned fabric from Cotton and twirls
Navy cork and zipper from my handmade space

Help recreating the Delia top from Free People

It feels simple but I cannot visualise the way the side/back pieces will lie as a flat pattern 😔

First Matching Set!

Sewed my first matching set. This was a “wearable toile” and I’m now ready to make so many more. Plus, I feel confident enough to add different pants to my plans.
Pants: pants from the Saguaro Set by Friday Pattern Company. What a fun and simple sew. So comfy and a nice, easy fit. Contrasting pockets from scrap fabric because I can.
Top: combination of shirring and ruching with 1/4 inch elastic. First time shirring a whole top. Sorta freehanded it and got tired 😂 the back has more lines of shirring. Elastic along the top to help hold it all up.
Fabric: the cutest little vintage cotton bedsheet I’ve seen at the thrift store in a while. I cut the pants so that the ribbon at the bottom of the sheet made the hem of the pants.

Outfit I've made this week- denim dress and a shirt

Last week I've made a shirt and a dress.

Shirt

Pattern : basic top block with inserted darts for waist. For sleeved I simply drafted basic sleeve block and fanned it out (eyeballed it) into some soft of bishop sleeves. Cuffs are just trapezoid rectangles that are a bit larger than my wrist. And for collar I followed instructions for a classic pointy collar but I rounded it up because I think it looks better that way.

Materials: floral viscose fabric (I don't know type) and synthetic purple chiffon

What I've learned: chiffon is more scared of me than I am of it! Also, don't eyeball everything. I had to redo cuffs.

Dress

Pattern: Top part is altered top pattern from Burda 7/2017 no.103. Original pattern was too short so I added 10 cm in length to reach my natural waist. I also made few other minor alterations (added 1 cm here, removed there). Bottom is pencil skirt. Pockets I just kinda sketched directly on pencil skirt pattern until they looked ok.

Material: 95% cotton 5% elastic denim, some unidentified scrap fabric from curtains for bias tape.

What I've learned: Make sure that you are cutting on a grain line! after I cut everything out I realized I cut it out wrong! Although dress looks good, it's hard to climb stairs because it's so stiff. For a top part it wouldn't be too bad, but my tushie and legs felt like mortadella in a wrap. Also, don't buy exact number of buttons. I had to improvise with a bee brooch because that first button broke when I tried to hammer it on. But to quote Bob Ross "happy little accidents"

I almost gave up a few times, but got it finished an hour before my event.

I've wanted to try to make my own Mirabelle dress from of her own kind for a while now. This was my first time doing any kind of boning/hidden support and I definitely went in over confident, but I got there in the end.

Searching for a similar pattern

hello! I have bought some old winter kimonos and I wanted to reuse them and try to make a padded jacket kind of like this one from Story MFG for next season. anyone has any leads to a pattern recommendation? I was thinking on making something in between a barn jacket and a bomber? Thank you in advance!
