Delayed 32nd Birthday Dress

Hello! I'm back with my first post partum dress.

This dress was designed to be nursing friendly as my baby girl is exclusively breastfed. I've used the pattern from this older dress

https://www.reddit.com/r/sewing/s/fxIxAvFyt7

except I lengthened the bodice (no need for empire waist since I'm not pregnant anymore) and I switched the sleeves for adjustable straps.

Other adjustments I made was adding boning on the sides, back, and lower front of the bodice. I also made sure the strap adjusters are at the front. The idea is that I can easily loosen the straps and bring down the bust and the rest of the dress will stay put since there are bonings to support it.

The Van Gogh prints are 100% cotton I found online for Php740/ USD12 per yard. (App I bought from is only available in SEA) I used up 2.5 yards of the green and 1.5 yards of the purple.

It feels good to finally be able to make myself something, as this doubles as my belated annual birthday dress. Lucky, too, since the moment I zipped it up this morning, my boss called asking if I can show up to work already 🤣. At least I looked pretty showing up.

I've received so many well wishes from here. Thank you all!

I made a skirt from vintage corduroy I thrifted.

First item of clothing I’ve sewn since 1984. Skirt pattern simplicity s9710. I made so many mistakes and had to unpick several times. It was fun though! Sewn from vintage corduroy that I thrifted for 3$.

Sewed a new cover for a baby play mat I bought from a neighbor

My cats are obsessed with it so I had to wrestle them off throughout this project

Just started sewing a couple months ago. Really proud of this piece.

Pattern is based on the cameron shirt from Helen's closet (https://helensclosetpatterns.com/products/cameron-button-up)

I made some sizing changes, replaced the collar with a lined hood that I based on my OrNot sun hoody, added hand pockets in the side seams and added lower front panel pockets to cover up the attachment of the hand pockets.

The shell is a mid-weight linen from Gordon Fabrics that I found in a fabric shop in Michigan during a recent summer vacation trip. The hood/cuff linings & top pocket are a deadstock linen/cotton blend from my local quilting store. Buttons are wood, from the same store.

I messed up a few small things, but am overall really super happy with this piece. Hope you like it! Suggestions for future improvements on the pattern welcome.

A Silly Sardine Baguette Bag

I did not follow any specific pattern for this, it was just a silly scrappy project I did on a whim after seeing a video online. I more or less followed this video but drafted the pattern of the fish for myself. I had just finished sewing my mom a bag and had leftover scraps from her project as well as a few of my own so I decided to mail her a bonus bag. All of the fabric is either linen, cotton, rayon or a blend of them. For the eyes I did a raw edge appliqué using HeatnBond and stitching it down with just a straight stitch. I got the eyes perfectly round by tracing a large washer for the outer part and a metal pog slammer for the inner part. My partner suggested I add the strap (made of cotton webbing) so it can be slung over a shoulder for easy transport. It was a really fun palette cleanser after a sewing slump and I had fun making it! It was pretty low stakes since it was all cut from scraps and I was only making it to be a goofy gift for my mom.

Made Shroomish hats for my daughter

My daughter was born with an amazing grumpy face that looked a lot like the Pokemon Shroomish, so I had to make her a hat! The first one came out too small so I sized up and made a second.

Pattern: the flower hat
Fabric: poly and cotton scraps

I used my cricut to cut out the pattern pieces and the appliqués for the spots. I deviated from the pattern and bit and made a lining from some of our old sheets. The underside of the brim is also green!

My first bra - Black Beauty

This is my first time sewing a bra. I wanted to make something special for my GF, and thought it would be a nice challenge as well (it was). This is the Black Beauty bra, view B, from Emerald Erin. It was made using the Emerald Erin Wood Anemone bra kit.

The channeling came out a bit messy, and I may have mixed up the right/wrong sides on the straps. Overall, I am pleased with the results.

I need solutions for thigh chafing

Hey! I am a total sewing amateur and i do not own a sewing machine. I am in college, you know how it is. I do have a kit though.

Due to me having to wear compression garments under my regular pants for medical reasons, every (EVERY) new pair of pants that I own looks like THIS (if the pic is too inappropriate, do tell me please, im insecure) after about 2 months of wearing them. The friction with the garments underneath is always too much. Is there ANYTHING I can do to fix this AND is there a way to prevent this from happening to new pants that i buy?

I have tried sewing on patches. They have come off due to the friction in a matter of hours. I need advice on what material to use and how to do it. PLEASE! I can't afford any more pants!!

Easiest way to alter this skirt? Lol

This lehenga skirt was ordered from India and as you can see is way too big for me around the waist (let’s ignore the length for now!)

The outer fabric looks to be one piece that has been pleated to fit the waistband and the only seam is at the back.
The lining has side seams.

There is a zipper at the back of the skirt and a drawstring. Pulling the drawstring in makes the waistband look very unflattering.

Can anyone think of any ingenious ways to fix this skirt without making it into a big job!? Unfortunately I don’t have long to work on this…

Leather Alteration help

I have mid size leather backpack and the zipper teeth are coming away from the zipper tape creating a small hole. I only have a domestic machine and I would like to fix it, but I haven't worked with leather before. Im debating on giving it a try but I wasnt sure the amount of work involved or if it would just be better to take to a repair shop. All tips, tricks and references are welcome!

Finished Boxer Shorts Project

Really chuffed with myself as these 1940's boxer shorts were a dream to make up. The fabric is a cotton poplin from my stash that I had from ages ago, well worth making I would say!

Mini Patchwork Linen Backpack

Made this after seeing someone else's recent finish of the same thing but can't find the post. This was a present for a family member who really likes pastels. I dyed some scraps of linen and made a base fabric with it. This was my first time making a bag complete with zippered gussets. The inside binding is hot mess but it's whatever. Overall I think it turned out super cute. The pattern is here.

35 year old serger?

I’m wanting to get a serger and I have a family friend who will give this one to me for free, but is it worth it or should I keep looking for a newer used one or just purchase a new one? This one is 35+ years old! I don’t know anything about sergers, any advice is appreciated!

Made a puffer jacket

i recently bought a puffer jacket pattern from Indiepattern on etsy and wanted to try it out since the difficulty was at beginner level. there weren’t alot of pieces to cut out so it was easy to assemble everything. the patches were sewn by machine using zigzag stitch and a little by hand. Finallly the kanji was made using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I got it printed on velvet shimmer to match the shine from the fabric and used a zigzag stitch to attach it to the back piece

Bubbling side zipper on dress with corset back

**please see my photos of the dress laced loosely in the comments; unfortunately the issue persists

Hello! My bridesmaids dress for my friend’s wedding has an issue where the side zipper bubbles when the corset is laced in the back. I’m wondering if this could feasibly be fixed or if I need to give up and go with another dress.

My current idea is to add narrow boning to either side of the zipper, but I’m not confident in this solution and I would love to see if anyone here has any better ideas of what to do.

I have sewn my whole life and made/patterned garments for the past several years, so I may be able to perform the fix myself. However, if the only solution is something that should be done by a tailor, I’m more than happy to go to one! Please let me know what you think!!

Newest finished project

Took an old hoodie that I didn’t wear anymore and modified it.

At first it was just the pocket and sleeves, but I used a satin-like mystery fabric that didn’t work, so I swapped it out for this white cotton.

The hood was bubbling and warped from age so I completely removed it and made bias binding for the neckline but removing the hood showed that there was warping in the neckline too. I had to remove 3 inches total by opening the shoulder seam and sewing in the extra.

All seams on the sleeve are hand sewn french seams, including the armscye. The pocket was sewn with a folded hem and backstitch. The bias binding is slip stitch.

Overall I’m happy with the colour scheme and contrast of this piece, and I’m glad I went with the bias binding to tie in more white in the design. I learned a lot about fabric choice and connecting a knit and woven with this project, which will be useful for my future designs and alterations.

Rubbed off a few of my fingerprints for 10 beautifully hand bound keyhole buttonholes

It's all in the name folks. Hand binding 10x 1.125" buttonholes through 2 layers of self fabric and canvas with silk buttonhole twist. But hey they look nice and will last a looooong time.
