Newest finished project

Took an old hoodie that I didn’t wear anymore and modified it.

At first it was just the pocket and sleeves, but I used a satin-like mystery fabric that didn’t work, so I swapped it out for this white cotton.

The hood was bubbling and warped from age so I completely removed it and made bias binding for the neckline but removing the hood showed that there was warping in the neckline too. I had to remove 3 inches total by opening the shoulder seam and sewing in the extra.

All seams on the sleeve are hand sewn french seams, including the armscye. The pocket was sewn with a folded hem and backstitch. The bias binding is slip stitch.

Overall I’m happy with the colour scheme and contrast of this piece, and I’m glad I went with the bias binding to tie in more white in the design. I learned a lot about fabric choice and connecting a knit and woven with this project, which will be useful for my future designs and alterations.

First machine project :)

So, many firsts in this one.
First project on the machine that wasn’t stitch tests, first time quilting, first time working with more than one layer, first time using binding, first time sewing with a non-cotton material.

Skulls is a polycotton fabric, fluffy layer (batting? Idk the terms yet) is from a broken ironing board, red layer is from a pair of swim shorts.

Didn’t do any research or read anything on quilting so it was entirely trial and error. I’ve seen the back part added after the quilting lines but I had already done it at that point so oh well.
Binding was hand sewn on both sides, white canvas that was folded so way too thick for the machine.

Template was freestyled off of a crochet coaster I had made years ago. I’ve got a few hand-sewn projects to my name, just new to machine sewing + quilting.

Just got my machine an hour ago :)

Got a brother LS14s. Any tips or improvements? Other than remembering to backstitch at the end lmao.

Stepdad gave me these since they ripped at the back pocket and he didn’t want them repaired. Made a bag liner with the ‘torso’ portion of them. Probably going to use the ‘legs’ to add to another pair of jeans I have.

First visible mend on one of my favourite pair of socks. I usually catch the holes when they’re still small enough to sew closed.
Could definitely be neater but it’s good enough. There’s a bit of puckering on the black fabric but it actually sits pretty nicely over the ball of my foot.
It’s very hard to get fabric straight and flat when you’re working on the inside of a sock which is on an embroidery hoop 😅 feel free to give tips for a neater finish next time.

Honestly it’s my first time altering clothing at all. These jeans were perfect other than the waist so I skipped through one website and decided to go for it. I think it’s pretty neat and Invisible considering, and I’m excited to finally wear these without needing a belt.
Was also my first time using an iron, surprised at how well the denim flattened.
