What to do with old t shirt?

I have this old t shirt that i really, really love, but it’s now so full of holes and it’s basically disintegrating at this point. Fixing it is not an option as this point because the fabric is so thin and fragile.

I don’t want to get rid of it as it has sentimental value to me, but i don’t know what to do with it. It is a very thin white t shirt and it has a large design on the front. I don’t want to do anything with it that would destroy the image on the front (no t shirt yarn etc.) and I would prefer it if was still usable in some form and not just displayed on a wall or something as i am autistic and it was a sensory safe item.

If anyone has any ideas for things to do with it would be greatly appreciated :)

Shorts recycled from ripped men’s trousers

Not perfect, but I’m still really happy with these—I’ve worked out how to cut a full pair of shorts for me out of a single pair of my partner’s old pants! (He’s an office job person, so they usually wear out at the seat and cuffs before the knees.) Only works if they’re wider/relaxed leg rather than slim fit, but that’s still quite a lot of fabric I can reuse this way.

Pattern is the Taylor Shorts by Greenstyle, which fit me pretty well as drafted with a tweak to the back waistband. (Actually, I think my hips may have expanded a little since my last pair, but I know this fabric will relax more when it’s line-dried so no worries in this case.) To cut them out of the original pant legs, I simply split the front and back leg pattern pieces down the middle! The side back seam incorporates the waistline dart. The split pattern pieces are narrow enough to fit across the width of the original leg pieces. I also changed the front pocket from a bagged style to a bias-faced patch pocket to save on fabric.

The fabric is a cotton-linen blend I’d been coveting ever since the original pants were new if I’m honest, haha. I fully deconstructed the original pants with a seam ripper (except the waistband, fly, and back welt pockets, which I cut out—not worth the effort), then pressed the leg pieces flat and laid everything out rather painstakingly to get it all to fit. I did put a center seam in the waistband, and the back patch pockets—a last-minute addition—are pieced and partly cut cross-grain.

The fly button and zipper are recycled from the original pants. I could have used the original pocket fabric to face the waistband too, but went for a leftover scrap from another project instead because the pocket stuff feels like a poly blend and I thought it might be sweaty next to the skin. The only “virgin“ materials in the project are the thread and waistband interfacing.

All the exposed seam allowances are overcast and faux-felled with topstitching. I’ve made this pattern several times and added a few other usual embellishments that make them feel more finished: a double layered fly shield, belt loops, and back patch pockets yoinked from a different pattern.

Feedback welcome, since I’m sure I’ll eventually make more of these out of the stack of khakis and jeans in the recycle pile.

I made a dress out of parking tickets

I made a dress out of tickets (not all mine, collected from others around SF) for cover art for a SONG i wrote about SFMTA. The song is out NOW on all streaming platforms as “SF money-taking agency.” Would love to have people stream it whenever they’re sad about getting a $100+ ticket! But if you don’t want to listen because you hate me, I understand.

Would love to hear about anyone’s parking ticket trauma

Upcycled sailor pants

These sailor pants where a huge challenge. The pattern is the Walnoot Trousers by Waffle Patterns. I’ve never made sailor style front pocket closures before, and I found the pattern confusing—subsequently the fit ended up needing adjusting with panels added down the sides. I think they ended up better for it though!
I found the fabric for free but my kid (the recipient) chose the pattern for them. Pockets and facings and bound seams used a free super soft bedsheet. They’re totally upcycled sailor pants! I’m super proud and super relieved they’re done lol

I made this twilight bag

I made this for a client a custom twilight bag with a custom strap that go with it. Over all I think 🤔 it’s pretty close to the concept

Newborn "jean" style jacket made with thrifted fabric, thrifted trim and scraps.

This is ridiculously cute if I do say so myself. Last picture is the fabric I used. As you can see I only had scraps of the piggies fabric but it was my inspiration for this creation. The gingham was thrifted and the entire jacket is flatlined with thrifted mid-weight cotton.

Upcycled denim and fabric

I upcycled old jeans and shirts to make an activity set that features the family's new home for the birth of their 2nd son. Shout out to my daughter-in-law for the crochet woodland animals. The detachable chimney is a rattle as is the mushroom and tree blocks. Measures about 15" x 8".

Jean style jacket made from literal scraps found in thrift stores. Size is 3T. Oh the possibilities!

I had to flat line the fabric with a stiff cotton (also thrifted) to add some body to it. I also had to scale up the 12 pattern pieces to make it a size 3T. I'm thrilled all the pieces fit together!

My fit for Pride this weekend

I thrifted this rainbow scarf with the intention of making a top, but since the temperature was going to be near 100°, I decided to slit up the sides and leave them all fluttery. 🏳️‍🌈

It's hard to tell in this image because of the coloring but the cropped tank underneath is a separate piece.

How can I upcycle this?

I bought it a while ago and I guess I thought it was a elegant coquettish shirt, but now it feels kinda granny. I don’t know how to make it cuter, any tips?
