Handsewn as my toddler's "emergency vet"

Not the world's biggest project but it meant the world to her, and that's all that matters. Definitely worth a few of the fancy bandaids. Plus I got to use this bonkers type of sewing needle that I think is specifically perfect for stuffed animal stitches 🙂

Irish Chain Quilt Hand Piecing Journey

Update #4: cutting more strips this morning and happened to slice a piece of my finger in the process.
😭🩸
Downside is it’s my index finger and it’s hard to use now. Upside: rotary blades are super sharp so it was a clean slice and it’s now nicely bandaged.
Is this a right of passage? Do I get a medal? Or just a fun little scar.

Any tips for hand-sewing corduroy?

I'm about to start an overshirt hand sewing project (Sew Liberated Slow Shirt). I have some fine-wale corduroy I want to use, but although I've hand-sewn whole garments before, they've always been lighter fabrics like linen and cotton. Of course I've hemmed many garments with heavier fabric, but there's no detail in those. Is there anything I should consider before I start? Specific needles? Specific techniques?

Completely hand sewn cloak

I finally finished my hand sewn cloak. It’s flannel lining and wool outside. The hem looks a little crooked but that’s because I’m a little crooked when I stand but I promise it’s even! Took about a week longer than I wanted so it didn’t make renfaire but now it’s all ready for next time!

Pencil case with beading & folder for small papers storage with beading.

Hand sewn using leftovers scraps from cotton quilt fabrics. The inside of pencil case is scrap kona cotton magenta. I have arthritis so putting in a zipper by hand limit to few times a year.

Made these some time ago and because there are requests for what to sew first project think to post small things I did handsew. Pencil case holds my watercolor pencils variety.

The background is a handsewn tiny roses pillowcase made from quilt cotton using 3/4 yard. Fabric was in a variety floral scrappack bought online from US years ago. Usually buy floral scrap packs and some kona cotton.

The gold seedbeads 6/0 were last leftovers , were bought at EEbeads.

Used quilt cotton thread Sulky and quilting needle.

How to get started

I am wanting to learn how to hand sew. Basically I can do a running stitch and that is it so far. I'm at a loss of how to continue. Should I start by just learning a bunch of different stitches then pick a project? If so, is there an easy place that will show me the stitches to learn? Any recommendations for easy hand sewing projects to learn first? That explain in detail how to do them?

Is it possible to entirely handsew jeans ?

Like I said. I don't have a sewing machine but I desperately want to make myself a pair of jeans because I can never find jeans long enough for me but I'm scared that it won't be strong or well done by hand. Patience isn't really a problem I crochet but it's about the "limits" of hand sewing other than time.

Best stitch to attach a tail to a plushie

My nephew asked me to see the tail back on his Pokémon plushie that his little sister ripped off. What’s the best way to hand sew it back on? I haven’t hand sewn in a few years

Coin Purse

This is my first post here, I recently just got back into embroidery and I decided to challenge myself and make a coin purse. There are flaws as it’s my first time making something like this but I wondered if anyone sells something similar to what I made? I was thinking about selling them once I practice a bit more but I’m not sure what to price them at. It took a while to make because it’s hand sewn obviously so does that factor into the price? I’ve included photos, any tips on how to make it better would be great too. Thank you.

I made my 1st leather thimble!

It was easier than expected and it fits me perfectly ! I seem to be allergic to most of the metal ones so this is perfect for me.

The process was easier than my sashiko thimble and I'm happy with the result :D

Can I use a non-spandex 2 way stretch knit with a woven intended pattern?

Hi guys!

I'm trying a new pattern, and it's my first intended for woven fabrics. I like to try new patterns with fabric I don't really care about and that I got for free, and so I cut this thin polyester someone gave me for the pattern, but the fabric is so old it is litterally falling apart. I loose a milimeter off the cut sections every time the fabric moves or is articulated. I've thought about stabilizing it with a lighter (thoughts?) but the fabric is super old and may just be expired.

If this fabric doesn't work out, the only other free fabric I have is a non-spandex minimal stretch woven fabric that is a touch on the thicker side (I could use it for a dress, t-shirt, or joggers kind of weight).

I know woven fabrics won't work for a patter that assumes stretch, is the opposite also true? I kinda think it could work, but I'm at the point in my sewing journey that I know enough to be dangerous but not so much that I don't make mistakes....

Any and all advice with either issue is greatly appreciated! Thank you all for being my community and answering my questions, no one else in my life sews, so I'm all alone out here.

I hate machine sewing with passion

Machine sewing is fast but it doesn’t spark Joy for me. 😩 I love handsewing for many reasons.

Irish Chain Quilt Hand Piecing Journey

Update #2: I have poked my fingers countless times now. It’s a slow process to hand stitch each piece but it’s a bit faster than I originally expected. I’m finding my points are more accurate than when I chain piece on the machine. It’s an incredibly enjoyable process. Lots of seam marking and pinning but they’re necessary steps. I have almost 14 of 98-something blocks sewn so far.
Here are a bunch of progress photos.
