New to Needles

I am looking to either buy or make a cheap as possible starter kit for myself.

  • What types and sizes of needles do I need to get started?
  • Is there an "all purpose" needle or should I aim for multiple types?
  • Can needles be sharpened?
  • Not needles but what tools besides thread and thimbles what should I look to buy asap?

I was thinking of buying vintage needle lots. Some of these maybe unused and needing sharpeming but in general I like to repair than toss.

I understand I need "sharps" but then the sizes and lengths throw me off. On google I was told I may need more needles like darners.

I was in Micheals yesterday and didnt see sharps from their offered brand: they had embroidery and darning.

I have gathered that Bohin, Tulip and James John are well-recieved brands. Idk if its allowed but I saw a John James kit for sale that may be the most time efficient

Hand sewn, tea dyed belt pouch. Not the prettiest but I'm proud of it

Just finished this after about 3 days of sewing in short bursts.

Fabric is cotton duck that I dyed in black tea. I need to learn to finish edges the right way instead of just stitching the crap out of them.

It is very sturdy and does hold my stuff though!

I love the portability of hand sewing (watching the World Cup)

I’m starting on my second ever garment after having done small alterations and mending in the past. the plan is for this to be a slightly A-line mini skirt to match a top I made on machines in a class. I drafted (that word feels like a stretch) the pattern myself and didn't have quite enough fabric so it will be a bit short and tight, and my stitches are in a wobbly line, but I feel like I have unlocked a new superpower!

the match was also Paraguay vs. France so there wasn’t much action to miss :p

Help finding meterial

Hello I am looking to make a dress like this for a friend but I am struggling to find a polka dot fabric with dots this large, they look to be 8-10cm in size, UK based would be better but I am fine with high shipping costs if that's what it takes

Which stitch would look best?

I’m trying to do this design on the back of my hoodie and was wondering what hand stitching would work and look best? I was thinking blanket or whip stitch but I can’t make up my mind. What should I do???

Hand stitched tote bag (from old denim jeans) This tote bag was once an old pair of denim jeans. 💙 Every stitch was done by hand (no sewing machine)🫠. The handles are handmade with macramé rope, attached using wooden rings. Rate it out of 10 and share your honest thoughts in the comments.💙

What stitch would I use to fix this?

Some of the stitches in this pocket fell out and I want to fix it. I want to emulate the two lines of sewing. What stitch do I use?

Fish patches

Started making fish patches with some sashiko embroidery as a means to diversify my skills and lessen anxiety about sewing. In my opinion, they turned out mostly fine, but there's quite a lot to be learned (like "have at least one dark color in a fish if you're making bright one" or "drop your ideas of how fish are supposed to look if you're doing fish with weird shape", as well as "round fish are hard to sew"). Fishes are: Pacific Pollock, Sunfish, Carp Koi and Salmon.

A dumb memory tool for woven fabrics

Hi all

I know this is probably common knowledge for most, but I always get the warp and weft fibers confused in woven fabrics on which is which. Today when reviewing it, a dumb memory tool came to me:

Warp drives take you long distances (long/lengthwise fibers)

Weft drives take you wide distances (wide/widthwise fibers)

Maybe it's just me who struggles with this, just wanted to share in case I'm not the only one.

Double Herringbone Wrist Bracelet

Hi all

This is absolutely rough around the edges, it was supposed to be a fabric scrap used to test adding snap clasps for future use, and I decided to try and make it a thing. It was originally very poorly sewed at the edges. I tried folding in the edges and catching them with a back stitch, but since I didn't leave any seam allowance there it left me like half a millimeter to fold. Seeing that it was holding poorly, I decided to just blanket stitch the edges to keep it from fraying. Then I added the embroidered pattern for fun and to practice my herringbone stitches. Far from a perfect piece, but I enjoy it, and I find that wearing my embroidery inspires me to do more of it. Anyways, thanks for your time if you read this far.

Best stitch for securing/hiding yarn piece?

I want to secure/hide the remainder of this piece of yarn into this tank top without it being super bulky. I can also trim it as long as it is stuck in place. I am a beginner by the wat
