immortal flats

I thought this sub might appreciate my ballet flats. I think they are around 7 years old now and they have done 2-16 hours a week of class and rehearsal over that time. They have just had their 4/yearly wash in the machine and will be redarned as soon as I get my thread back from the pointe beginners at my studio!

Unfortunately Capezio has changed the make of the hanamis at some point over the last couple years, so I will never have another pair like these. Also, the darning has molded them to my feet in a way I like too much to move on from! I have experimented with moving over to bloch elations, and while they're okay I just wear them for shows and auditions where I acknowledge these are maybe too ratty to be appropriate.

It's fun to watch the darning progress and see where I wear them out and the differences between my feet. My left foot is slightly wider which I think is why there is a lot more darning around the ball of the foot on that side.

UPDATE 7: Back is done. Arms next.

Hey r/visiblemending! Back with another update.

The back panel is finished, Our Lady of Guadalupe in sashiko surrounded by boro patchwork. It’s been a long process getting here and there are definitely things I would do differently if I started again but I’m happy with how it turned out overall.

The cross stitch sashiko pattern on the center panel framing her came together in a way I wasn’t expecting I think it ties the figure into the surrounding boro work reasonably well.

Next up are the sleeves which are still completely plain light wash denim so there’s still a good amount of work left before this is actually finished.

Will post again once the arms are done. Thanks for following along!

Claw marks on my desk chair?

My cats like to sit up by my head sometimes while I work, so my desk chair has a bunch of tiny claw marks from them climbing it. I was thinking about sewing a cover for it but I’m not sure how to handle the odd shape. Any advice for how to make a nice cover, or other ideas for how to mend this? Pic of the culprits at the end

Patched up my trusty old friend

He is far from perfect but full of love. I lined his edges with interfacing and sewed on some crocheted patches i made. I just need to crochet him an overall with a leg on it and he is fully done. But for now he is perfect for returning to his job in helping me sleep c:

This is the first time I did such a thing and im proud of it

How would you repair these Jean shorts?

They’re split higher than my liking and I want to fix them but just sewing it together seems boring

Best option to fix this?

I was wondering if this could be fixed with some type of paint? What type of paint would be the best for this? Should I buy specific fabric paint, or screen printing paint, or would posca markers, or acrylic work? Please give me your suggestions or recommendations! I really want to fix it.

Holes in elastic cuff sweater

I've fixed sweater that have a rib knit cuff, but I'm stumped as to how to patch these holes on this elastic cuff sweater. I need to replace the elastic as well since it's starting to fall apart.

Would it be easier and less bulky to add a jersey knit patch on top? Cut back the worn down hem, and add a new one? (though I worry about the bulk on that) Or would it make the most sense to darn it with embroidery thread? Though i'm worried that might cause issues when I fold the fabric back over.

Any help or resources would be greatly appreciated!

Before and after

Kinda visible repair/total replacement. Bought this 12 years ago from a department store in Tokyo. Thought the blue leather was really cool. Fast forward to now, realised it was fake leather when everything started flaking off. Plus the depth of the bag was always a bit of a gripe of mine. Started unpicking everything in January, taking templates, adding some depth to both compartments plus another 2 small pouches to the front. Reused all the hardware, most of the internal fabric and mesh from the original bag except the buckle snapped on final reassembly. Replacement fabric is from a swag that I found and some navy drill cotton for the internal depth. I know the colour scheme doesn't really work but trying to just work with what I had. Its pretty much taken 4 months to complete and many late nights when the kids had gone to bed. I'm fairly confident the fabric will hold up for many more years to come. It isn't perfect but happy with the result.

How does dye work for faded spots?

I have a very old shirt that is equally very near and dear to my heart. It’s completely dark grey and recently got a few grease stains.

When trying to scrub them out with dish soap, the color faded away in those spots. I simply want to dye it grey again, to make the spots less noticeable.

I can guess that a grey dye will make everything darker, such as the normal grey going darker as the faded spots darken too, but I wanted confirmation and clarification on my guess.

Any advice on, 1. how to proceed in general, 2. the title above, 3. how dye may behave with/on grease stains, and any more advice you think I may need (considering this would be my first time working with it), would be greatly appreciated!!

First attempt at repairing holes with scotch darning/ honeycomb repair

Thank you to those who answered the question I asked about this type of repair! This is my first try at it. It’s not as neat as I would like but it’s a nice colorful way to repair an old athletic shirt.

Can I use fleece to patch a small hole in jeans? What are the downsides?

My mom has some small holes in her jeans, the jeans are stretchy. The only thing I currently have that is similarly stetchily, over than an old t shirt is some green fleece.

It's a bit stretchier than the jeans. I cant figure out if that or the texture or thickness might be a problem.

The shirt is bright pink and thinner than the jeans. I'm just not sure what I should try

How should I fix this pocket?

My favorite pair of jeans has fallen victim to the iPhone pocket hole and given it's about to fall all the way through (and these jeans were recently discontinued RIP), I could really use some advice on how I should mend it. I'm thinking along the lines of a patch, but the location and my very beginner sewing skills kinda limit my options so I thought I'd ask here. My initial thought was maybe a cute iron-on embroidered patch, but I'm worried about continued stretch from my phone. So what are some options that can reinforce the pocket but still be fun and beginner-friendly in terms of skills?

UPDATE 6: Our Lady is almost done — and I need your opinion on the rays

Hey r/visiblemending! Major update on the back panel, she is nearly finished!! 🥹

Honestly I can’t believe how far this has come from that shaky freehand tracing a few days ago. Hoping to have the back wrapped up by next week then next are the arms.

What’s left:

•	The rays on either side of Our Lady, I already drew them on but they are SO painstaking to stitch and I’m genuinely debating whether to do them or leave it as is

•	A few line streaks still to fill in

•	Thickening up the cherub’s face at the bottom which still needs some work

One thing I’m actually kind of happy with, instead of doing traditional sashiko dots for the embellishment detail I ended up just filling in the spaces between existing stitching lines which gives it this almost braided rope texture. It wasn’t planned but I think it works.

But my main question for the community, should I do the rays? I already have them drawn on so they’re committed to the fabric. But it’s an enormous amount of stitching at this stage and I’m so close to the finish line. Part of me wants to push through and complete the full image, the other part of me is just exhausted lol.

What would you do?

I don’t know how to fix this hole in my shirt

Hello! I have this shirt that has gotten a hole right in the middle in the front. I want to fix it so I can wear the shirt but I don’t know how to go about doing that lol. I’m afraid an iron on patch would be super noticeable and it’s not on a seam so I can’t sew it. Does anyone have any advice on how I can fix it without the shirt looking dumb? (The lighter in the picture is for size reference, the hole is about the size of a quarter)
