A PSA for the Europeans in here who live in a country with DM

DM are the only company in my country that actually lists what they have in their detergents.

They have a product called Oxi power which as far as I know, is similar to the Biz that they have in the US. It has lipase and oxygen bleach.

They also have this ultra sensitive wash powder which actual contains DNase, a compound much praised in this sub.

You can probably combine them and get good results, I have done so. I just wanted to let the Europeans know that there is a way to get these products, especially the DNase.

/r/laundry is the best of the internet.

Spa day has significantly improved my confidence that I can take care of my things. It's amazing that a box of Tide Clean & Gentle and a new bucket has made gross-looking laundry unrecognizably clean.

I didn't grow up in a "clean" family - nothing smelled, the dishes got washed, the laundry was done (with detergent), and we all took showers - but not much else was taught. Because of what I've gathered from r/laundry, I'm now finding the joy at 35 of taking that second step to care for what we've invested in.

Thank you to all of the people who contribute to this subreddit and those like it. While the internet has proven detrimental in so many ways, the opportunity for people to contribute information and experience publicly and communally is what makes humanity better. It's light years from what we would have had to do pre-internet to learn any thing new - purchase a million issues of women's magazines, hunt for info in newspapers, watch hours of TV, or hope that the library had books on the topic.

In some ways, it's just laundry, but to me, it's so much more. Thank you again.

Spa Day for my Pillows

I’ve had these down pillows for years and have washed them, but those weird yellow stains have always persisted. I soaked them in hot water with liquid Tide and Biz for six hours and then washed with Tide, Biz, and ammonia. I’m so excited, and I know you all will appreciate it.

Sentimental baby blanket needs a wash, but care label says do not wash?

My late mother gave me this blanket for my daughter when she was born. Mum passed somewhat unexpectedly when my daughter was 6wks old and it is one of the few things she gave me so it is understandably very sentimental to me. After two years of love and snuggles, it desperately needs a wash. It doesn't have bodily fluids or anything on it, just a lot of love. The care label says do not wash but I feel like that's just because of colour/dye potentially running, and I don't think dry cleaning will do a sufficient job. Any suggestions on how I should go about testing if the dye holds and how to wash it?

Vintage linen dress

I just bought this amazing vintage dress, and I think it's linen (there's no fabric content label). The label says "dry clean only", but I'd really prefer to wash it myself since it's a summer dress and I am definitely going to sweat in it. The thing I'm worried about is that the blue part is going to stain the red part. I was thinking of hand-washing it in really cold water with a color catcher sheet, but I'm still a bit nervous. Does anyone have any other suggestions or advice on how to wash it safely?

(Also, I am in Italy, so I don't know if I can find all the products that are available in the US)

How do I get the cigarette smell out of my grandma’s knit blankets?

Inherited these that she made in the late 80s and really want to keep them, as gram was the inspiration to learn to knit! However they absolutely reek of smoke and they are queen size, so not easy to roll in a towel to dry. Any suggestions for getting the smell out?

Whatever happen to this style of laundry hamper/sorter? Used to be heavier duty metal ones with decent mesh bags. Now, I can’t find anything except low quality plastic junk like the one in the pic

Best stain remover for baby clothes?

Hi everyone!
I’m looking for a really effective stain remover for baby clothes. My baby is starting solids, and I’m constantly dealing with food stains (fruit, vegetables, oatmeal, etc.).
I’ve tried washing everything right away, but some stains still don’t come out completely.
What stain remover has worked best for you? Bonus points if it’s safe for baby clothes and doesn’t have a super strong smell.
Thanks in advance!

Ballpoint pen on white cotton

*Someone* got a couple of lines of ballpoint pen (biro) on my white cotton cushion cover.

There's also grey cotton embroidery on the fabric, so I'm wary of cleaning methods that could cause the colour to bleed.

However it's just an IKEA cushion and not old so I'm open to options to try and clean it. I'm in the UK which affects the cleaning products I have access to. Thanks folks!

mushroom in washing machine??

just moved into a new student house (ie probably not very well taken care of previously) and on my second wash a whole ass mushroom came out along with all the items being covered in brown flakes that look like mildew? definitely not something that went into the wash.

i had noticed that the first wash i did had an odd smell but ive also just swapped to a much better detergent and thought i was smelling the scent change.

ive just cleaned the detergent tray and run a long hot (70c) cycle with washing machine cleaner - is there anything else i can do???

How do I get out those gnarly pit stains? Tried pretty much anything.

This hoodie of mine has some really noticeable pit stains that I haven't managed to get out.

It feels like I've tried all the things over the past years, it has been spa dayed, treated with oxygen bleach, baking soda and deodorant stain remover (not in that order). It feels like the stains have gotten worse instead of better. Do you still have ideas how I could get rid of it or is this a goner?

It's an 80/20 cotton/polyester fabric, care label is too faded to read but I remember it being pretty unremarkable.

As far as general laundry goes, I am using a front loader in cotton mode and a washing powder with enzymes (plus occasionally some extra oxygen bleach), as well as a citric acid rinse afterwards. Basically all my clothes are black, so I don't sort by colour - thats why the "white" half is so grey.

I'm based in Germany.

Mold on shirt with sentimental value. Is there any way to save it?

I had kept it in a ziploc bag for a really long time and I took it out for a bit but started getting a headache for three days and my lungs felt icy.

I put it back in the ziploc bag and sprayed it with hypochlorous acid because I wanted to be gentle with it because I love the shirt so much and it’s really old and delicate.

Two weeks later there’s a lot of mold on it and I’m distraught.

What can I do? Will there always be mold on it even if I wash it? I can’t wash it with hot water. I’m like actually really distraught.

Thoughts on Ariel Powder?

$16.98 for a 12 lbs bag. It looks like it has lipase in it. Has anyone used this before?

My clothes come off dusty whenever I wash them

Hi ! I have a problem with my washer-dryer (idk if I'm using the right term), which do not seem to wash my clothes properly, wheter I dry them in the machine or outside. The clothes are always dusty and my cat's hair is still on it, like the machine is not able to evacuate little particles. When I use the dryer, all the dust accumulate in the seals, like it cannot be "flushed". All the answers I found on the internet are not working. I cleaned the filter, changed my detergent, put gadgets that are supposed to grasp all the dust and hair, cleaned the seals and wash the machine with no laundry in it with an appropriate product. I'm tired because I don't wear some of my clothes because of it and I don't know what to do, I paied this shit 500€... The model is a Hisense WDQA1014EVJM**.** I'll take some pictures of the seals and the supposed evacuation, and of the clothes too.
(I'm sorry for my english, I'm not native). Also, if this post is in the wrong r/, please tell me ! Thanks :)

Canadian here — where do you buy citric acid for laundry (underarm BO stains)?

I made a post earlier in this subreddit about dealing with stubborn underarm stains / BO in my work clothes (I’m a nurse). I’m trying to fix it properly now and wanted to get feedback on my routine.

So far I’ve bought:

  • Original Tide powder detergent
  • Eco-Max stain remover spray

This is the routine I’m planning to try:

  1. Spray Eco-Max directly on the underarm areas (inside + outside of scrubs)
  2. Let it sit for about 20–60 minutes (haven’t decided exact timing yet)
  3. Wash with Tide powder in the machine (warm water, normal/heavy cycle)
  4. Add an extra rinse cycle if possible
  5. Air dry and avoid the dryer if there are still stains

I’ve also seen people recommend adding citric acid to the wash (in the softener compartment), but I’m not sure where to buy it in Canada or if it’s actually necessary. Is Resolve Gold a citric acid product or something completely different?

Switched to powdered detergent and now all my clothes are pilling

I’m so confused and frustrated at this point. I switched to 365 unscented powder, dirty labs booster, and downy rinse as my previous routine of liquid tide free and gentle wasn’t getting clothes clean enough. Ever since switching to the new routine, almost every single piece of clothing I wash has a massive about of pilling and fuzz. Nice brands, super expensive cotton, it doesn’t matter. And these are all mostly years old pieces. I use the recommended amount of detergent, I even tried pre-dissolving it. I always wash and dry on low heat. I have no idea what’s going on, but I’m panicking because my expensive stuff feels like it’s getting destroyed.

Am I using too many enzymes? Is the powder too alkaline? No cellulase? Help!

Poop help needed

My beloved little boy is going through an unpleasant phase. Maybe it’s IBS, who knows (we have an appointment with the doctor soon to figure it out, fingers crossed). Anyway, poop accidents are happening multiple times per day. He’s trying his best and I keep reassuring him that he is loved no matter what. But the smell!

The laundry situation… is bad.

I haven’t been spa daying because the volume is just too much. And does anyone really want a pot of poop water sitting in their bathroom overnight? And then you’ll have to drain it in the morning. Best I can do is throw stuff in the washer at night with a lot of Biz, set it to heavy soil/hot water, and pause the cycle so it sits overnight. Then I wash again with regular detergent and a booster, then I do an extra rinse with citric acid.

No good. It still stinks.

Please give me advice.

I’m in the US (Virginia).

Spa day machine dream

I’m an OTR trucker. My clothes get pretty bad at times. Spa day fixed that. Seriously. I can’t believe the difference.

Here’s the rub… I’m often out for a few months at a time. It’s such a chore to wash so many clothes that it takes a long period of time.

Can Kismai get their own deal on a high end top loader machine that has a spa day setting? Maybe it has some insulation and you can do 12-24 hour soak? It should have a multiple rinse and the ability to automatically add citric acid at the correct time.

I would pay a serious amount of money for one. I wouldn’t blink at $3k for a quality machine.
