Firefly Lottery in Elkmont: A Rant

I would like to begin this by saying - I should’ve known.

I won the lottery to see the blue, synchronized fireflies outside of Gatlinburg in the Great Smokey Mountains. Apparently, 48k people applied so I was excited and prepared for the experience. Travel and parking was easy, the staff was super prepared. The first red flag, though, was that every staff member said something different when it came to where we should setup for the best view. We hiked a little before dark and it was amazing. Saw a giant turtle which was a highlight. We picked a spot away from the masses but as soon as it got dark it was obvious the only spot to see the fireflies was with the crowd. We walked to the main trail and did end up seeing *some* of the magic. The problem was that people would not stay still, they would not stop shining their lights, and folks who brought their kids thinking they’d want to sit outside from 6-11:30pm were obviously wrong. No matter where we were on the trail, people were CONSTANTLY walking past. There would be maybe 2-3 minutes of quiet, dark, peace and then a crowd would stomp past with lights. People would notice the fireflies and SHINE THEIR LIGHT AT THEM? They would stop right behind you with their lights oblivious that folks were trying to enjoy. When people started to get into their cars and leave, we knew we were toast. The headlights added to the absolute lack of ambiance. We were camped out with some wonderful, considerate folks and I am so angry for us and them. People started to leave before the event even started and it makes me think - WHY EVEN COME? The total lack of awareness and consideration from a majority of people who attended this event was astounding. It’s the type of situation that makes you loose hope in humanity.

I do not recommend this event and strongly encourage you to check out some other spots where the fireflies gather. I hear Pink Beds near Asheville has potential. If you know quiet firefly hotspots, hint at them in the comments 👀 thank you
